An MSU grad - "Why We Burn Couches" -

Solid retrospective. Also, I'm glad I've never been in the middle of a college crowd riot...

I graduated from the University of Michigan, so of course the below comments show bias.
* At the time I enrolled at UM, the school up north was still Michigan State University of Agriculture and Applied Science. Hence, it's on-campus nickname, "Moo. U." Its football team had a famous and very good coach, Duffy Daugherty. In 1965 they went 10-0 behind a defense built around Bubba Smith and monster LB George Webster; but they lost the Rose Bowl to Gary Beban's UCLA. (Just as Go Blue's basketball team, led by Cazzie Russell, would lose the NCAA BB Finals to a littler but faster UCLA team.)
* In terms of academics, I'd rate the B1G and the PAC-12 as equals. The PAC-12 alone can boast elite institutions, but I'd have no problem paying the freight for a kid to attend any of each conferences top three schools. In fact, I did (Northwestern).
* Kudos to Michigan State for its long-run athletic success in football and in basketball (post-Magic), which have not been attended by scandals in academics (see: SEC) or non-sports bad behavior. Current coaches Dantonio and Izzo deserve much credit for recruiting well and wisely.
* But I am after all a UM grad. Best one-liner about MSU I ever heard, from a fellow alum: "The herd shot around the world."
Good Rose Bowl, and Fear the Tree.

Good read. "No one expected a partythey wanted to see the haze of tear gas encompass Cedar Village."
Concur with academic orientation of both conferences... -

Totally agree. Pac 12 a little stronger at the top, a little weaker at the bottom. Here's the London Times Higher Education Supplement rankings for the universities in each conference:
Pac-12 rankings
3. Stanford
9. University of California at Berzerkely
13. UCLA
24. Washington
56. University of Spoiled Children
91. Colorado
98. Arizona
143. Utah
148. Arizona State
251-275. Oregon
276-300. Oregon State
301-350. Washington State
Utah State, not listed in top 400
Big-10 rankings (but with 12 teams. But there's already a Big 12)
#18 Michigan
#22 Northwestern
#29 Illinois
#30 Wisconsin
#46 Minnesota
#49 Penn State
#59 Ohio State
#62 Purdue
#83 Michigan State
#132 Indiana
#161 Iowa
#251-275 Nebraska

Did you temporarily think we were the Mountain West? The Utah in our conference is the University of Utah, which they rank #143.

ugh...what was I thinking? will alter...
In high school, I used to go up against a lineman named Greg Sinnott who played for Utah State. 6'8" or 6'9", 300+. He was a soph, I was a senior, so he hadn't completely developed yet, but he was a big strong guy. Only guy I knew who could hit one of those limited flight softballs out of our local softball field.

Also, I think MSU et al are in the Big Ten, not the Big-12.
It's amazing how top heavy our conference is in terms of education quality. Our top 4 outclass the Big Ten, but the final 6 are severely outclassed by the Big Ten.

I'm still not really sure why they burn couches.

Burning things is fun. Maybe their choice of tinder is a bit suspect -- I mean, what are you going to sit in when drinking, smoking weed and shooting the shit -- but can't argue with the impulse.

Yes, I felt cheated when the article didn't tell me that. Why
couches?

Because they're really big and really flammable. Plus, have you
seen the average college house couch? Most of those things need cremation purely as a public health service.

When the Salvation Army and Goodwill get donated couches that are hopeless, they donate them to institutions of higher education. Its a win win win situation. The help organizations don't have to pay dump fees, the schools don't have to worry about expensive furniture being vandalized, and students spend less time being unproductive.

The article should have said that most student apartments have couches and dressers that are big, easily carried and will burn. That is why they burn couches. The rest is just filling up space.
