49ers fullback position in flux... - fullmetal - 12-16-2013

Interesting turn of events.  No word on why Marecic and the Niners aren't signing a contract...all quotes from Twitter.

@mattbarrows: In addition to Anthony Dixon, another in-house candidate for #49ers' FB job is backup LB Michael Wilhoite, who played there some this summer

@mattbarrows: Hearing that Jim Harbaugh's college fullback Owen Marecic will NOT sign with the #49ers.

@mattbarrows: It's not his natural position. Team would rather have Owen Marecic... @markpbrunner Can Dixon replace him as the teams new FB?

@AdamSchefter: 49ers indefinitely lost FB Bruce Miller to a scapula injury. 49ers bringing in former Jim Harbaugh's former Stanford FB Owen Marecic.

Hopefully Marecic passes the physical and is offered a contract-I like Anthony Dixon but not convinced he can shoulder the load all by himself.

However, if he can block like this Owen may not see much action.

Kawakami reporting that Marecic passed on the 49ers. I have no idea why, but I've always thought of NFL fullback as one of the worst positions to play if you're thinking about your longterm health.

Quote: -10:28 p.m. update: Revised to reflect the point that Marecic himself chose not to sign with the 49ers this week, according to a source.

Harbs wanted Marecic, but Marecic didn't want to sign...something tells me Owen Baalke-d at the potential drama, or maybe Baalke didn't offer him a respectable contract...

Id really like to know the story behind the story with Marecic.  I know Baalke refused to draft him, taking Kendall Hunter instead.

Let's just say that not all of Harbaugh's former players are going to jump at the chance to play for him again, and I will leave it at that.

But I was always under the impression that Marecic was Harbaugh's "favorite player." The feeling wasn't mutual?

Maybe Marecic is still upset that the niners passed on him and he had to go play in cleveland . . .

Heard the same from non-football sources.

No, I think Marecic was happy not to have been drafted by the Niners.  As was Richard Sherman.  As was Doug Baldwin.

I don't want this to turn into a Harbaugh-bashing thread.  First of all, I will be eternally grateful that he revived the program from nothing and turned us into one of the elite programs in the country.  Secondly, it is not a coach's job to be loved, or even liked, by his players.  That being said, Marecic is hardly the only former Harbaugh player who would pass up a chance to play with him again, and it has nothing to do with the draft.

Someone tweeted Kawakami to ask why Marecic didn't sign, Kawakami wrote: "not sure if he wants to play, at least this year, is what I think is the reason."

Ben Gardner tweeted this on Dec. 14: "The great Owen Marecic and I with the gym to ourselves for a couple hours. Talk about blue collar"

FWIW.

Might be something to discuss on the private board...
