Rumor mill: Stanford assistant in line for coordinator job? - washingtonismoney - 12-18-2013

I mean, of course Boise State's interested in Derek Mason as their defensive coordinator.

Oh, it's Mike Sanford? Word?

(We'd miss Sanford for sure. Just funny to me that the only rumor concerning Mason so far this silly season is about the job he isn't being considered for.)

Maybe people are less impressed with him this year? I dunno, it does seem odd. Maybe it'll pick up once it's NFL firing/hiring season, since it seems like if he leaves, it'll be for an NFL DC job.

OFFICIAL: assistant leaving for Boise.

(It's Mike Sanford.)

Everyone on Twitter says it's a big loss for Stanford--he was also an ace recruiter (he recruited Barry J).

Re: Rumor mill: Stanford assistant in line for coordinator job? - stupac2 - 12-18-2013

Earlier in the year ESPN ran a piece on the "best PAC-12 recruiters", Lance Anderson was #1, and Sanford was farther down the list. I can't see exactly where because it's an Insider article and ESPN is doing that baffling thing where it doesn't let me see Insider stuff despite actually having Insider.

I personally have no idea how big of a loss this is, but it'll interesting to see if we keep promising from within (Prichard could take this job, right?) or if we bring in someone else.

Didn't realize Sanford is so young until looking at his GoStanford bio. He is a 2005 Boise grad.

From the article:

Quote:1. Lance Anderson, OLB coach, Stanford

Forget the facts that Anderson was the key cog in the Cardinal signing one of the best offensive line classes in the history of college football in 2012 and that he took the lead in getting commitments from Georgia standouts Kirk Tucker (Tucker, Ga./Tucker) and Denzel Franklin (Atlanta/Pace Academy) in the 2014 class and Arrington Farrar (College Park, Ga./Woodward Academy) in the 2015 class. Anderson would top this list simply due to his standing as the admissions liaison on the Cardinal staff. He works with every one of Stanford's recruits and commits to make sure they hit every stringent requirement for admission, which makes him a vital component for a staff that has put together phenomenal recruiting classes in recent years.

Mike Sanford is "honorable mention".

(And the not honoring your Insider subscription is bad. I'm no longer an employee, but we got that right on mobile. My advice -- visit the mobile website: http://m.espn.go.com, and I think that fixes your browser cookies and you should be able to see Insider articles again.)

Re: Rumor mill: Stanford assistant in line for coordinator job? - stupac2 - 12-18-2013

I guess my recollection was wrong, then. Maybe it was UCLA who had two? Someone had two. And I've tried logging in and out, restarting my browser, and now visiting the mobile site, all to no avail. Despite clearly having the insider mark on my profile, I can't see the article. It's rather annoying. If I had paid more than $5 for it I'd be pretty angry. (Insider just isn't worth much money to me, so I wait until one of those random magazine deals comes along that I can pay with paypal (so they can't steal my cc#) and use that.)

I'm able to view insider pages, just not that particular article.

Congrats to Sanford.  The more our coaching tree expands, the better we are in the future.  Some day we may need to hire an OC or even a head coach, and having former coaches who have served in that capacity elsewhere will be an asset.

So... this position now goes to whom? Have to think Pritchard is still a bit green, but he obviously played QB. I'm going to guess an external hire.

Well...that's one way to hang onto them.

This is a loss. If you've met Mike Sanford, you can see how he would be an excellent recruiter. Good luck to him, and I hope he finds his way back to Stanford some day.

Re: Rumor mill: Stanford assistant in line for coordinator job? - fullmetal - 12-19-2013

Will Sanford be a recruiter at BSU as well?  I would imagine OC duties take up much more time than QB/WR position coaching...

Re: Rumor mill: Stanford assistant in line for coordinator job? - Hank 91 - 12-19-2013

I have no idea how good he is at coaching, but I hope that Troy Walters at least gets an interview. He's currently the wide receivers coach at Colorado after holding that same position at Texas A&M and NC State. At the very least, I'm guessing he'd be a good recruiter, as he'd be able to sell his experience as a student at Stanford, show his Biletnikoff Award to wideout prospects, and tell stories about playing in the NFL. It would be great to have him back.

Re: Rumor mill: Stanford assistant in line for coordinator job? - Trevmiesterj - 12-19-2013

Living up here in Bronco country I follow BSU somewhat and already I am impressed with the staff Harsin is putting together.

Marcel Yates from A&M is another top notch hire.  Served as co-defensive coordinator with the Aggies and is also regarded for his recruiting prowess.

With Sanford as OC/QB coach and Yates as DC I see BSU regaining their place atop the Mountain West in a hurry.

Re: Rumor mill: Stanford assistant in line for coordinator job? - fullmetal - 12-19-2013

I've spent a lot of time in Boise, and I have one family tie to BSU--always a nice sentimental favorite to root for (aside from the usual suspects).  Would love to see Harsin's teams find success against big name schools.

stupac, i get the annoying insider block issue regularly too.  but it usually fixes itself.  hard to imagine that espn has so many insiders that they can't keep up with or afford to fix this bug... but that seems to be the only reason left in my list of dumb things.

Re: Rumor mill: Stanford assistant in line for coordinator job? - FarmBoy - 12-19-2013

It would be great to have Walters back on the Farm. Add to his Stanford roots, he has has Stanford East in the NFL roots (a couple years catching balls from Peyton.) What more could you ask for? I find it surprising he didn't have a better career, especially when one reflects on the career Doug Baldwin is having, who I view in a similar vein as an undersized, deep ball threat. For his whole NFL career, he had 102 receptions for 1,135 yards and nine touchdowns. In 3 years, Baldwin has had 129 for 1,924 yards and 12 TDs.

I'm still bummed about his broken hand during the Rose Bowl. If not for that, we could be a a 4 game win streak in the Granddaddy...
