Rose Bowl - which are Stanford's sections? - muggum - 12-26-2013

Trying to snag tix for the Rose Bowl and terrified of having to sit in an MSU section.  Can anyone weigh in on where the Stanford-heavy sections are?  Many thanks in advance!

Re: Rose Bowl - which are Stanford's sections? - pefloresjr - 12-26-2013

The original Stanford allotment was for sections 2-5, 8-10, and 26-28.  Seats in section 10 or 11 will bump right up to MSU's endzone seats and their band.  Stanford generally dominates the East side of the stadium (opposite the press box). That is sections 26-28 and 1-10.

There is a thread with more detail about seat locations:

Cheers,

Thank you very much!

According to the MSU alumni association, it looks like we have only 6 sections to MSU's 19.  I highly doubt the accuracy of this seating chart:

The seating chart is based on self reports of seat locations on the following  site. http://www.rateyourseats.com/fantrack.php?bowl_id=rose-bowl-2014

Note the sample size.

Re: Rose Bowl - which are Stanford's sections? - yvonne - 12-29-2013

What's scary is that the original tweet of that appears to be from Scott Westerman, head of the Michigan State Alumni Association. Is he really that dumb, or was he trolling his own fan base?

Re: Rose Bowl - which are Stanford's sections? - stupac2 - 12-29-2013

The sample size isn't really the problem (if the number is accurate that's like 2% of attendees, a pretty high number for this sort of thing), it's that it's almost certainly a nonrandom sample. How many Stanford fans have seen that site before? I sure hadn't. Whereas it seems to be getting some publicity around MSU if their AA head is aware of it. We'll see what it looks like come gameday.

Yep, self reports.

If the MSU alumni association is touting this seat map thing, it's no wonder that the responses favor Michigan State. Responses obviously are not random. Are they so clueless that they think this is a meaningful poll? Or do they just enjoy stroking their own collective ego?

To be fair, given the whole "MSU doesn't travel so we'll pick literally anyone else as an at-large" thing it makes sense for them to be all "HEY GUISE SEE HOW GOOD WE TRAVEL?????" It's pretty dumb since anyone with a brain can see through some of this stuff, but then again the people they're trying to convince don't really have brains.

Only the image was tweeted (not the site where it came from) so most did not know the source or the sample size involved. Curiously, the MSU alumni association head stated it received this information from "Rose bowl people"...others have pointed out the error of this graphic which he has acknowledge yet the tweet is not removed, so the "error" continues to be retweeted as evidence of MSU's strong fandom. A sad tactic but seemingly effective.

The east side of the Rose Bowl will be a sea of Cardinal.

http://rateyourseats.com/fantrack.php?bowl_id=rose-bowl-2014 is the origin of that Rose Bowl graphic.  Pretty small sample size, and I suspect other problems.  Have at it, statisticians.

Re: Rose Bowl - which are Stanford's sections? - BostonCard - 12-29-2013

Interesting that the "Stanford sections" have appeared to expand.  Certainly from the time of the tweet, when even sections 1 and 2 were "MSU sections", to when I looked a few hours ago.  But even from then to now, it went from 17% Stanford to 19% Stanford.  It tells me that as the site is becoming more publicized, more Stanford people are logging on.

Also, since the site doesn't require verification, it is not hard to game.

Here's the map now: http://i.imgur.com/emDnJlL.png

Note the number of people in the highlighted section. If each section is going to have 30,000 people in it, traffic is going to be a bitch.

OK then.

Hopefully the Goodyear blimp will take another aerial photo of the stadium, and then we can compare those color intensities.  My guess is that MSU's green will be lacking compared to these "expectations" :p

That MSU Alumni Association head also tweeted: "got this data from the Rose Bowl people."

I get the feeling from his tweets that this guy is mostly a dumb jock/cheerleader and doesn't know anything about anything except to trumpet MSU at all costs. I bet he's got a great handshake though.

MSU fans have been saying for some time that they don't think aerial pictures will be all that obvious, because they suck at color coordination and expect to see a lot of white. That still seems odd to me, since even Stanford's white (or grey, or black) gear still has red on it. I guess we'll see.

Apparently MSU is now bringing 265,574 fans to the game. Wonder how they swung that? ;)

What a complete waste of time. Who would even bother to rig this thing?
