Classy Stanford Fans at the Rose Bowl - groverj3 - 01-03-2014
I just wanted to drop by and say that I was impressed by how classy the Stanford fans at the Rose Bowl were. My group of friends from college and I had a good time hanging out with some recent grads while tailgating before the game. I even ran into a Stanford fan on the gold line after the game that also drove there from Tucson, where I'm living these days (small world, right?).
Hopefully your experiences were similarly good. Best of luck next season!

Yes, my experience with MSU fans mirrored your experience with Stanford fans. There seemed to be an unusually high ratio of gracious fans to a-holes. I was impressed with the turnout, which was at least 2:1 MSU to Stanford, and probably more. Most of the fans I talked to were knowledgeable, gracious, and respectful both before the game, and after. It felt better somehow to lose to good winners. I appreciated the MSU band's tribute, and though I often cut the LSJUMB a lot of slack, in light of the MSU band playing "Come Join the Band" in tribute, I groaned at the wisecrack about couches. Anyways, congratulations on being Rose Bowl Champions, and thanks for the gracious message after.

Good to hear. Every fanbase has it's bad apples, but I like to think we're better than most. I think most of us were just excited to be there. I graduated from MSU in 2011 and we haven't been to the Rose Bowl since before I was born.
The Stanford band does their thing, it's frankly kind of amusing and it doesn't really bother me at all.

I had a great experience at the Rose Bowl in spite of the outcome. MSU fans and Stanford fans alike were happy to be there to cheer for their teams. Can't remember seeing anything that would be consider unruly fan behavior. Even the drunk guys in the bathroom line

In terms of sheer tonnage, I was surprised that MSU fans did not match up well with the Wisconsin fans from last year. ;)

MSU fan here. Could not have been more impressed with everything about Stanford from your team, your coaches and your fans. All the pre and post game quotes from your coaches and players were all class. The fans that we sat and spoke with mirrored that same class. As our success continues (hopefully), I hope our team and fans will always respond in similar fashion - win or lose. Stanford certainly represents the gold standard and this should be celebrated! Good luck next year - I'll be pulling for the Cardinal!

We'll hold you to that pledge, should we meet again in the playoff ... ;)

Ha! Should have qualified the statement - "except when playing Stanford". :)
Regardless, loads of respect for your team, coaches and players! Haven't seen that level of class from a program since Penn State took it to Miami for the NC some 30 years ago!

groverj3 and Blade Slade, allow me to chime in with the others as to how classy, gracious, and warm the MSU fans were. And I think I may have the award for the most unusual situation where I was the recipient of such classiness:
My fellow season ticket holder, my son, and I stayed at the Millenium Biltmore in downtown LA. Lots of fans for both teams there. After the game, we walked out of the hotel around 8 for dinner. My son was set on burgers, so we headed over to The Counter, a nice hamburger place. The hostess put us at a table with high chairs very close to the door. My son ordered their appetizer dish of fries and fried onion strings. We were eating those and waiting for our burgers when ..... all of a sudden, a hand appeared and grabbed a brobdingnagian handful of the fries/onions. It was some woman who then nonchalantly went to a just-vacated table nearby to add salt and ketchup. As you can imagine, our first response was stunned silence. Did that really happen? I then hopped out of my chair and interrupted the hostess to let her know of this street person. This may not have been a first time, as the hostess headed to the woman (still adding her condiments) to escort her out. The woman squirted ketchup on the face of the hostess and was not at all eager about leaving. I got out of my chair again and did my best Arnold Schwartzenegger impression - I barked at her, "Get. Out."
As I mentioned, we were seated by the door. There were at least eight Sparty fans waiting to be seated, who witnessed the whole thing. They were all similarly 1) as shocked as we were; 2) sympathetic; 3) apologetic [I told one, "Hey, it's not your fault!]; 4) supportive [when the server came with our waters, I handed him the half-empty dish of fries/onions that I wanted no further part of and told him the story. When he looked dumbfounded, a couple of the Sparty fans came over and said, "We all saw it! It really happened!" after which the server said, "I'll bring another...."]
There was another couple of Sparty fans who I guess were at a table and not at the front waiting. They must have seen it too. When they left, they asked us if we had been given a new dish.
I sure hope I never another dining incident like this. I suppose it's due to the location (it's a nice burger place, but it was downtown at night). But the silver lining was the kind words from Sparty fans, who also added that it was a great game and that we have a great team. The silver lining for them was, they have another story to tell their friends when they get home. :)
