2014 Offense - beatla14 - 01-09-2014

I have a question to pose to more knowledgeable football people on this board.

In 2014 we seem to have a bevy of players who can do either A)Major Damage in space, B)Run by people, or C)Both.

What I don't see on the O is a guy (besides maybe R Wright who I am high on) who can consistently break tackles/lean forward for those extra yards. I think that this upcoming year I would like to see a new wrinkle to our offense where we have a pistol formation full house look like this
                                                                39  8  26
                                                                      22
Ty and Cajuste as WR's. I really think this personnel group could put a lot of stress on Defenses in different ways. Read Options with any of the 3 backs, including possibly a triple option look off of the read. Motioning guys out for bubble screens. Slant/Flat route combos both sides. Screens to any of the three backs. Cajuste could also line up as a Tight End in that grouping and you could throw some extra wrinkles in there.

5-8 plays a game with this group out there could really bolster our production. I know it's not a classic Stanford set, but I do think it could pay major dividends. Thoughts?

Re: 2014 Offense - yvonne - 01-09-2014

I've been wondering about that myself, since David Shaw said in his early interviews that "we're going to come off the bus running power." We don't have a proven power back who can play in the style of offense that we've played the past two years. Nevertheless, Shaw is familiar with sets that use more explosive backs. Remember the offense with Glyn Milburn? He played behind Whitfield and the Northwest Road Warriors, who at the time were our biggest ever offensive line. David Shaw was on the team then. That's the model of offense we'll see.

I like the concept, but I think Ward will be the best fullback in the country--find a spot for him.

Not really related to Stanford, but the new OC hire at Alabama will be fascinating.  Nick Saban, like Bill Bellichick, isn't one to let the game pass him by.  He's a fierce competitor, who though he prefers a pro style, huddle-based offense, let his OC go to Michigan.  Some have speculated Saban is going to capitulate and go the spread/no huddle route.  His OC hire will be quite instructive.

On another note, now that Sarkisian is at USC, they too are dropping the pro style, huddle-based west coast offense, and going with the spread, no huddle offense.  It's all about getting your best players on the field and ready to play as soon as possible.  They'd rather tire out the defense with number of plays, tempo, and by giving it too many things to think about than pounding on them physically like has been Stanford's MO.

I don't know if an offseason has ever been more intriguing strictly in terms of which styles of offense teams are going to adopt or evolve to for the next season.

Funny that you mentioned Saban, OCs and USC in one post since Kiffin is going to interview at Bama for the OC position.

Re: 2014 Offense - BostonCard - 01-09-2014

That's good for us.  The more spread-style offenses in the league, the fewer defenses will be prepared to deal with pro-style offenses.  Plus, our defense does alright against the spread (see Oregon, ASU), and has struggled somewhat against pro-style offenses (USC, MSU).

Here's a brief thing about the demise of Student Body Left/Right at USC:

As an aside, I don't know that Alabama is going to a spread offense; reportedly, they are talking to Lame Kiffin:
