Re: Johnny Dawkins gets contract extension! - Papa John - 01-12-2014

Thanks for the heart-attack inducing subject heading, Mr. Garvin.

As for Dawkins' history with ranked teams, I think Stanford beat Oregon at home last year when the Ducks were ranked. But as for ranked teams away from Maples, you might be right.

I had no expectations that this game was in the bag until the final buzzer. In fact, I watched the last five minutes expecting Stanford to lose, and I hate that feeling.

I thought we were toast when Huestis fouled on that 3 at the end of the first half.

This win can be held up as a sign of what this team can be, but it would be nice to have a team that came to play like this on a nightly basis and not just when they feel like it.

I suspect I am not the only one who, while appreciating the victory, has decidedly mixed feelings about these glimmers of hope that appear now and then in an otherwise gloomy period of Stanford basketball. I fear a few more of these and we might end up,with a really nice run in the NIT, and more rationalizations for not making a change.

OTOH, if this really was a turning point for Brown, and if he, Randle, and Powell really develop and the we go on a nice run in the PAC-12 and reach the NCAA, I will gladly eat my words.

Damn, hope really does Spring eternal.

Stanford won because Oregon was even worse at shot selection in the final minute than Stanford was a the free throw line - Brown 1-2 and then Randle 0-2.

The door was left wide open for Oregon to stroll through in the last two mins but they couldn't figure out where the doorway was.

This team is still going to finish under .500 in conference.

Just to give Josh a break (he could use one after having "Useless Huestis" chanted at him by the Oregon students after each missed shot, foul and turnover), while the ball was blocked cleanly on his dunk that would have iced the game, he was fouled on every inch of his body--top of the head, the face, the body, the legs--all of which was overlooked by the officials who apparently subscribe to the logic-defying theory that not blowing the whistle in the final minute means that they are not deciding the game.

Oregon basketball fans: apparently just as out-of-touch as Oregon football fans.

My question is whether Oregon is deserving of a top-25 ranking, given the current 3 game slide they're in. Beating a good team on the road is nice, but I wonder who strong a win this will be at the end of the season.

FWIW, Wilner also interpreted Muir's stance on Dawkins as "NCAA tournament or you're fired."

Re: Johnny Dawkins gets contract extension! - Papa John - 01-13-2014

So what will it take for Johnny Dawkins to keep his job (per Jon Wilner)? In looking at the rest of the schedule and the CBS RPI rankings, here's the scenario for men's basketball (57):
WSU (134)--win
UW (80)--win
@ UCLA (37)--loss
@ USC (96)--win
UA (6)--loss
ASU (61)--win
@ Cal (33)--loss
@ UW (80)--win
@ WSU (134)--win
USC (96)--win
UCLA (37)--loss
@ ASU (61)--win
@ UA (6)--loss
CU (11)--loss
Utah (182)--win

By my calculation, the above results would put the team at 10-8 and a 6 seed in the Pac-12 tourney. So add one more W and one more L for a final record of 20-12. This seems overly optimistic given the team's track record, but would 20-12 with road wins over UConn (26) and UO (24) be enough to make the NCAA tournament? I'm guessing Stanford's RPI would end up in the 40s or 50s because of strength of schedule.

Re: Johnny Dawkins gets contract extension! - 76lsjumb - 01-13-2014

There's a reason I don't go to Vegas... In another thread I posited a 0-3 Stanford taking on a 0-4 WSU this Wednesday evening at Maples, which would have been for 11th place in the conference.  Turns out it's going to be a 1-2 Stanford taking on a 1-3 WSU, with the winner ending up right in the middle of the Pac and the loser STILL being able to look down on U.SC [at least for a day or two, at a minimum].

As others have pointed out, though, this season is tough because every improbable win creates short-term joy that is necessarily tempered by long-term unease.  Or, to put it differently, what I keep thinking of is:  Charlie Brown, Lucy, football...
