2014 OL - OutsiderFan - 01-14-2014

Surely there will be gnashing teeth over the relative unexpected Fleming departure, but let's look at a potential 2-deep 2014 OL:

LT Peat - Austin
LG Garnett - Fanaika
C  Shuler - Oser
RG Caspers - Bright
RT  Murphy - Davidson

This doesn't include Casey Tucker, who could play as a True Frosh if need be.  Honestly, Murphy is probably an upgrade from Fleming in terms of athleticism and movement.  Even though that's four new starters, they all have had playing time given how many OL play for Stanford.  If any team can bring in four new OL starters and not miss a beat it is Stanford.  OK, and Alabama.

Re: 2014 OL - stupac2 - 01-14-2014

Yeah, I'm not particularly worried. There are decent odds that the 2014 starter at 2 or 3 of these positions would have won the job even without the departures. Yankey is a big loss and overall line play will likely take a step back next year, but it'll probably be a very small step.

One of the great things about the Ogre package is how many of these guys have spent a lot of time on the field.

Kevin Reihner might also be a possibility at center or guard.

Re: 2014 OL - BostonCard - 01-14-2014

Thinking ahead to 2015, are we going to need a new LT because Peat leaves early?  I hope not.

Screw the ogre package.

Form over substance sometimes is a bad thing.

Re: 2014 OL - socalstanfan1 - 01-14-2014

We all love the flavor of the month.  I'd love to get Casey Tucker, but I would not expect him to play a lot as a Freshman, except maybe in the jumbo/ogre packages. We also have Davidson, Oser, Bright, all of whom have been in a the system for a year or more, plus Rheiner and Brendan Austin, who've not yet broken through.  The depth of this part of the team is really astounding.  I still think the first few weeks will be a bit rough since even the most talented line needs to work together. But, barring injuries, this unit should get better and better as the season goes along, and next year might be the best line we've seen. Which is really saying something.

Any word on Mcfadden? I must say I am very concerned with the interior OL depth.

I think between Shuler and  Rheiner and possibly Oser, the center position will be ok. There will no doubt be some growing pains, but wasn't Shuler one of the top ranked centers coming out of HS two years ago? And the guard positions with Garnett, Caspers, Oser, Bright, Fanaika...

Expect some inconsistency in the first half if the year, but I'm guessing we see weekly improvement and excellence by the last 5 games or so.
