I'm sure Lance Anderson will be a good defensive coordinator, so onwards and upwards.

Happy for Mason. It was a matter of time. And now we have an SEC team to cheer for! I hope he wrecks havoc there, inflicting some upsets that help our playoff chances.
I hope he gets Kirk Tucker as well as whoever this mystery admissions casualty is.

THAT would be really cool!

I held a slim hope that Vandy might choose Chad Morris instead, but it's clear now that Morris isn't the guy.

Pep Hamilton has also withdrawn his name from consideration.
Yes, I will be rooting for Vanderbilt. Thanks Coach Mason for all you've done at Stanford.
Re: Looks like Mason's gone -

According to Bruce Feldman they offered Pep the job first:
"#vandy offered Pep Hamilton its HC job & had a private plane set to get him & his family this am but he passed to stay Colts OC, per sources"

A mysterious decision if you ask me (on Vandy's part), but we all get a bit lucky sometimes. Good luck to you, Mason.

"I believe in a blue collar approach, not a lot of flash." -- Lance Anderson
Here's a Cardinal Coach Speak featuring Anderson. It would be pretty stupid to evaluate his potential as a DC based on a two-minute vid clip. I will note that he's described in the video as a very hard worker, always going over game film. He's also a Harbaugh hire from the USD days, so he and Shaw have been on the same staff a long time.
He does seem pretty clearly to be the next man up, but I also wouldn't be shocked if he's promoted to "only" co-defensive coordinator and someone else is brought in from outside.

Didn't Manny Diaz drop by practice at the beginning of last season?

Yes, I think so. But Diaz runs a 4-3 and we're a 3-4 team, so that doesn't seem like a great fit.
A random outside name I wouldn't mind seeing getting pursued -- Utah State's Todd Orlando. I was really impressed by the way his defense shut down Jordan Lynch; he's their safeties coach, so he could fill the open DBs spot. And he's a longtime DC, albeit at the non-AQ level, so there's some experience there as well.

"Vanderbilts search to replace James Franklin reportedly has ended. Stanford defensive coordinator Derek Mason will soon be named head coach of the Commodores, according to 247Sports."

Go Vanderbilt, the Stanford of the SEC! I hope you guys get all the players that Richard Shaw doesn't want.

What about Clancy Pendergast? He did a great job at USC last year and is looking for a job since Sark brought Wilcox with him. He knows the Pac 12. Cal took a nosedive last year without him and USC defense was amazingly improved with him. He runs a 5-2. Don't know how different that is from a 3-4 since our OLB's often acted like DEs.Â

One wild card name: Jim Leavitt, former Kansas State DC and USF head coach, now LB coach with the Niners.
Admittedly, this is unlikely. Take a look at what he said a year ago:
Quote:Auman: Do you have any interest to return to college football? You've talked about how much you've enjoyed the NFL and the success you've had in these first two years.
Leavitt: I would never leave here unless it was a head BCS job, and it'd have to be a special one. That's the only way I would move out of the situation I'm in. I've had offers already, but I'm not going to go unless it's something very special. I'm glad I didn't leave. Look at this!
http://www.tampabay.com/blogs/bulls/content/super-bowl-qa-49ers-jim-leavitt/210535
His baggage is pretty heavy (he reportedly struck a player, lied about it, tried to cover it up, etc. ), so I don't see a head BCS job opening up for the guy--unless he does something to rehab his image, like take a high-profile(ish) gig at the collegiate level.
I'm sure many on this board would rather pass on somebody with that in his past, and it might also be a bad idea for football reasons (can an older DC defend the modern spread attacks? He's 57.).
FWLIW, lotsa Be.ars screaming for Pendergast - Redrum - 01-17-2014
But each and every one of them is a PBTS victim. Post Buh Traumatic Syndrome.Â
The risk of not promoting Lance to DC immediately is that Mason might offer him a DC position at Vandy. Anderson certainly delivered for Mason at Stanford as LB coach and recruiter. Stanford will have to move fast, because if they look outside for a DC, the timing to keep Anderson on
in any position in the program gets tight. Maybe impossible. Anderson is credited with both personal and organizational accomplishments on the recruiting front. Vandy over Stanford? His choice, as stated by Milton: "Better to rule in Hell than serve in Heaven."

I expected at least five negs by now for the Diaz comment....

I heard that David Shaw is a candidate for the open DC position at Stanford. Or maybe it was Jim Harbaugh.

That's because people read Pendergast and got so excited they forgot about the Diaz comment.
Pretty sure we could start a pro-Diaz thread that would make Texas fan forums explode.
Re: Looks like Mason's gone -
washingtonismoney - 01-17-2014
I would've gone with outrage over the Diaz suggestion, but Shaw occasionally snags coaches from bad organizations and proceeds to reinvent them. 59er fans hated their special teams under Pete Alamar; with Shaw, Alamar's coaching the best special teams in the conference. Tarver (with the 49ers) and Bloomgren (with the Jets) hailed from dysfunctional pro organizations before coming to Palo Alto. Based on the evidence, you wouldn't be wrong to just assume whomever Shaw hires will work out.
Diaz fits perfectly into the Alamar mold, anyway. Diaz was well regarded before coming to Texas, and even piloted a good defense his first year there. But the Mack Brown rot scuttled the ship; it doesn't seem implausible that, while working for a better coach, he magically looks much better.

Wikipedia already says it, so it must be true:

Hopefully Mason isn't getting paid more than David Shaw. It seems Vanderbilt was in a no leverage situation, so may have made Mason an offer he couldn't refuse.
On another note, I must say I lost my innocence on this one. I truly believed Mason when in December he said he wasn't ready to leave Stanford.
I wouldn't leave Stanford without another job either - Redrum - 01-17-2014
That was December. In January he had one, for much more money and a step up the ladder. I will sympathize with him in coming seasons when the SEC reality sets in.Â

Feh. If we were in the SEC east we would have been playing in the MNC. If we were in the SEC West we would have beaten OU in the Sugar Bowl.
