First game I saw in-person (finally!). The good:
- Crowd was way fuller/into game than expected. The TV coverage had made it seem like there were a few hundred people there.
- Chasson Randle is a revelation. Quick first step, strong getting the ball up, solid shooting stroke. I know he had 30+ points, but it feels like he could've had more by taking his man off the dribble.
- Huestis looked athletic as always.
- Nastic - really aggressive, strong post moves
The not-as-good:
- God, I hate the 2-3 zone. The rotation always feels slow and #2 on their team got a couple dunks right under the basket when someone forgot to rotate (I think it was Powell).
- What's with Nastic yelling "ball! ball! ball! ball!" over and over every time he has even a little position/is open on the perimeter?
- Powell's foul whine face
- Did Randle ever sit? Felt like he played 40 minutes..!
- Lorenzo Romar - enough said.

- That was a decent win, though let's not forget that Washington is a middling team in the Pac-12 (RPI in the mid-80s coming into the game).Â
- Chasson Randle can score at will when he wants to. If you haven't seen one of his good games this year, you are missing out. He has an amazing ability to get to the basket through any number of defenders. The last Stanford player that I can recall scoring with such ease is Casey Jacobsen.Â
- The best decision of the year so far? Josh Huestis' haircut. In the 2 games before the haircut: 10 points total on 4-19 shooting. In the 2 games since: 28 points on 13-19. Coincidence? I think not.

A good win, but as correctly pointed out, Washington has a terrible RPI and doesn't have a single quality win. Yes, they beat Colorado but that was the game where the Buff's all-world player Spencer Dinwiddie tore his ACL and played only 15 mins. So the reality is that Washington is a mediocre team just like Stanford.
And the minutes are adding up quickly. Randle, Brown, Powell, and Heustis all played 34-37 mins. That cannot last over the course of a season.

Point well taken, but we need to win those games against middling opposition. OSU was also a middling team.

Agreed but don't extrapolate from this to say anything more than Stanford is in the think of the middling teams. We beat two teams with RPIs over 80 on our home court. In no way shape or form does this given an indication that this team has a snowball's chance in hell of winning 20+ games and making the NCAAs.

Yet our RPI went up to 54. Yes that had more to do with teams we best non conference.Â

I think credit is due here.
These two wins do keep the hope/possibility of an NCAA post season at higher than "a snowball chance in hell". They may not be a reason to get excited, but they do get the team closer to 20.
I fully expected the team to revert to norm and drop one of these two games after the uplifting win at Oregon.
Watching this team over the last few years has been terribly frustrating. They show flashes of brilliance (see NIT two years ago) and the talent seem to be there, but it just doesn't seem to be able to put it all together. The only consistent thing about this team has been it's incosistency.
So allow me to take some joy in three wins in a row, including a sweep of the middling Washington schools at home, as I have known not to take anything for granted when it comes to this team.
I'll try not to get excited and anticipate yet another crash and burn performance this week in LA, but this mini streak has exposed me yet again to more dissapointment and frustration. sucker!

Agreed. The team is doing better and deserves to be recognized as such.Â
The 'bracketologists' (I imagine they all wear lab coats and have little white beards) at ESPN, CNNSI, and CBS all have us in the dance at this point, albeit barely. That is certainly progress over the last 5 seasons.Â
After the Washington wins, the team needs to win 8 of its remaining 13 games to have 20 wins for the season going into the conference tournament. That is doable with our schedule.
Given its history, I will not surprised if this team has a let down and fails to reach that 20-win mark, but, with its recently improved play, I will no longer be surprised if the team manages to pull it off either. Again, that seems like progress.
Re: Stanford 79, Washington 67 - StanFan88 - 01-21-2014
Curious where you see 8 wins on the remaining schedule?
Next 4 - 2 wins at best (@USC, ASU)
5 after that - 2 wins, maybe 3 (USC, @WSU, maybe @UW)
Last 4 - 2 at best (CO, UT)
Road wins are very difficult to come by.

Road wins are tough, but this team won their last two true road games against likely Tourney teams (UConn and Oregon) and came close against Michigan at a neutral site.Â
I'm not saying that we'll get to 20 wins, but I wouldn't dismiss the possibility. I suspect that we'll win a game or two that you have as losses and lose a couple that you have as wins. That would put us squarely on the bubble, right where we are now.
Re: Stanford 79, Washington 67 -
TriangleTree - 01-22-2014
Here's my eight wins:
5 out of 6: @USC, ASU, @WSU, USC, COLO, UTAH
2 out of 4: UCLA, @Cal, @ASU, @WASH
1 out of 3: @UCLA, ARIZ, @ARIZ
Bonus win: PAC tourney
The key is to get to the last weekend (Colo + Utah at home) at 18+ and finish on a nice note.
Short of that, it's got to be time for a change.
ps: knowing this team, I wouldn't be shocked with a win at ucla and a loss at sc.

In other words, right about where this team has been for several years. Not quite good enough to make the big show.

Don't look now, but, in the current AP and Coaches' Poll, the Pac-12 has exactly...wait for it... ONE team. Granted, that team is #1 Arizona. And, of course, there are a lot of games still to play and a lot can happen -- just ask Ohio State. Still, finishing 5th or 6th, or maybe even 4th, in a conference that, midway through the season, has only one team ranked in the top 25, doesn't sound like a sure way to get into the tourney [Jerry Palm's current bracketology notwithstanding].
Re: Stanford 79, Washington 67 -
CapitolHillCard - 01-22-2014
The PAC-12 is currently ranked third in the conference RPI standings, ahead of the ACC, Big East, AAC, and A10.
http://www.cbssports.com/collegebasketball/bracketology/conference
The reason is that 11 of the 12 teams in the PAC12 conference are ranked among the top 100 teams in RPI.
Stanford is ranked 51 in ESPN's RPI, and among the top 40 teams in the other ranking systems BPI, sagarin, kenpom, etc.
There are a lot of games yet to be played and I would not be surprised if this team collapsed, but let's be fair: there is a reason why all the analysts, not just Jerry Palm, say we would be in if the season ended now.

The reason = parity.
Arizona is head and shoulders above the rest. UCLA and Cal, then ASU, Oregon, Colorado and Stanford could all potentially get into the tournament, though none will be a top-4 seed, and the latter four are likely to be sub-8 seeds or out. We need to consistently win against the weaker teams (no more performances like OSU), and do reasonably against the low APR U's, ASU's, and UCLA's of the world or shock Arizona once. The road is not easy.

To back up what Garvin and BC wrote, for kicks I checked out Stanford's conference record at the halfway point since 2008-09.
2008-09: 3-6
2009-10: 4-5
2010-11: 4-5
2011-12: 5-4
2012-13: 5-4
As everyone knows, we received nary a bid to the NCAA tournament in the previous five seasons. Now, most of us are expecting/hoping for a split of next two weekends, leaving Stanford's conference record at...5-4.
It is difficult to maintain cautious optimism when history keeps repeating itself. So call me a hopeful skeptic.

Yes, but two things are different this year. First, the Pac-12 is actually pretty good for once. And second, we have a good out-of-conference road win at UConn. The Tourney selection committee LOVES good road wins.
18-19 regular-season wins plus one more in the P-12 tournament won't guarantee us a Tourney spot, but it would make the Tournament selection show worth watching.
Re: Stanford 79, Washington 67 -
BostonCard - 01-22-2014
The bloom on the UConn win is fading fast, unfortunately. It is still a good win (especially because it is on the road), but not as good as it once was. And the P12 is better, but aside from Arizona, has a lot of decent but unspectacular teams.
I think 18 wins in the regular season would be hard to overcome without at least making the finals of the P12 tournament. We may be able to get in with 19 conference wins and a win (or preferably 2 in the tourney). But I don't think we'll feel safe without 20 wins in the regular season and at least 1 P12 tourney win, and even then we will be hoping for no upsets in one-bid conferences.

My worst case scenario? We do just well enough to be one of the first four out, leading to the inevitable "if only we hadn't had all those injuries, we clearly would have made it" commentary, leading to an "it really isn't fair to let Dawkins go under these circumstances, and, besides, he had a pretty good recruting class" conclusion by a demonstrably-reluctant-to-fire-him Muir, leading to...yet one more season just like this one [and the past few] with Dawkins at the helm.
I still haven't seen any real development in the team's performance to suggest the reason we've won the more recent games is due to anything beyond the fact that Randle's been finishing his drives a little more frequently and various other players have had occasional hot hands.
There have been plenty of seasons [including the past few] where I've agonized at mid-season over the various permutations and combinations necessary to get us in the Dance, even if only by a whisker. I just can't muster the enthusiasm to do that this year. Sigh... :(
Re: Stanford 79, Washington 67 -
BostonCard - 01-22-2014
I get the concern, but considering that he has had five years to get it right, and the last big class he signed would go oh-for-four in getting to the NCAA tournament, I think there would be no reason to believe that the class Dawkins is signing now would do any better. 2013-2014 is the last year in the window; next year we will have Randall, some OK guys with injury issues and little experience, and a bunch of freshmen. Though anything is possible, especially in basketball, you get the feeling that this year really is do or die.
Just because Muir didn't fire Dawkins last year doesn't mean he will tolerate another failure to reach the tournament, no matter how close we get. I could be wrong, but my guess is we are NCAA tourney or bust.
Lastly, if I did go through a coaching transition, wouldn't you want to do it with a brand new, highly touted freshman class coming in? That would diminish the pressure on the incoming coach.
