NFL releases Miami workplace report -
Kathy - 02-14-2014
Quote:In the 148-page report, which comes with a warning that the language and behavior described in the report are extremely vulgar, it concludes that three starters on the Dolphins offensive line, Richie Incognito, John Jerry and Mike Pouncey, engaged in a pattern of harassment directed at not only Jonathan Martin, but also another young Dolphins offensive lineman and an assistant trainer.
The Report finds that the assistant trainer repeatedly was the object of racial slurs and other racially derogatory language; that the other offensive lineman was subjected to homophobic name-calling and improper physical touching; and that Martin was taunted on a persistent basis with sexually explicit remarks about his sister and his mother and at times ridiculed with racial insults and other offensive comments, Ted Wells states in his summary.

Don't think those text messages were meant for public consumption. (Deadspin commenter put it his way: "The Martin family needs a wireless voice plan."
Creepy reading such personal stuff; my fear is this report will help future players but not Martin.

I did a search on "Stanford" and read mostly those parts. In Martin's weighing the pros and cons about doing something, this stood out and is both sad and NOT TRUE:
"my legacy at Stanford will be tarnished"
Martin's legacy at Stanford stands on its own. If anything, my admiration for Martin went up. It takes bravery to stand up to not just bullies but also the organizations that foster and enable that kind of behavior. He did himself, the NFL, and the broader issue of bullying a favor by tapping out.

According to the report, there was all sorts of ugliness going on but the coach and management knew nothing. Likely story.

There is one odd part about the report (which I read from SI's blog's summary):
Quote:We also agree with the view, expressed by many of Martins teammates, that it would have been preferable for Martins grievances to be handled inside the Dolphins organization rather than played out in the national news media.
Uh, what evidence is there of that one again?

Incognito's such a wuss. Now that everything's exposed, he's tweeting "Pleeeeeese stop the hate." Shoe doesn't feel so good when it's on the other foot, does it, tough guy?

According to the report, offensive line coach Jim Turner was a knowing contributor to the ugliness.

I just finished reading the entire report, I had time to kill between lectures today. I actually have been in a similar situation to Martin, the efforts he made to be liked by his "bully" reminded me of my attempts to be cool with the tough guys, and it led me to being the worst version of myself I have ever been. I truly feel for the young man.

What I don't understand is why they fired the GM, but not the Head Coach? Sure the GM hired these particular troglodytes, but the coach is closer to their behavior once they are on the team and responsible for managing them. Perhaps our resident expert on all things Florida can enlighten us?

What Publius and SUBuddha said applies to me as well. I feel the report totally vindicates Martin's actions.
I'm guessing.... -

...they fired the one they wanted gone and didn't fire the one they wanted to keep.
That's an interesting one... -

The law firm Paul Weiss did the work and prepared the report. If you go on Paul Weiss' web site, you see tons of companies named...but a search on "Dolphins" says:
There are no results for
Dolphins.
Ask Brad Karp. He's chair of the firm, specialist in employment litigation and the NFL is his client:

After reading this report, I think I hate the Dolphins more than garvin. I will cheer extra hard against them this season. I hope they go 0-16 so they have another perfect season to go with that undefeated one.
I will also say something that I have not read. Ryan Tannehill is culpable. He's supposed to be the leader of that team. I think he put out messages in support of Incognito. He deserves to get sacked: first by the new GM and then by pass rushers.
Now that Incognito has deleted his Twitter to hide in his cave, I hope the Internet hive mind turns its attention to the Twitter account of his evil henchman Pouncey. So far no.
On a more positive note, Jonathan Martin has a terrific mother. That is one wise lady. She has rocketed to the top of my favorite Stanford football moms list.
And a question for our resident legal experts: is "We do not credit his account", the widely accepted legal venacular for "He is a sh!tty liar.".

The distinction is only meaningful if one believes that the NFL's interest is substantially different from the team owners' interests. I'm not convinced the relationship here is all that different from the relationship between an employee plaintiff and the lawyer employed by the international union.

With this sickening incident being increasingly defined by the spotlight of this report, my thoughts are also turning to where Martin might have an opportunity to thrive. Unrelated, but also Gerhart. Love to see both land in great spots.Â

Stanford East, clearly. Gettin' the band back together!
