new defensive backs coach - ChicagoCard - 02-17-2014

Per Lombardi's Twitter (retweeting other sources), new defensive backs coach might be down to either Duane Akina or Eric Lewis.

Akina coaching in action...

Re: new defensive backs coach - washingtonismoney - 02-17-2014

Akina has a superlative developmental record -- Earl Thomas, Kenny Vaccaro, and on and on -- but I heard some Texas fans considered him a bit long in the tooth. Still, a similar theory as the Alamar and Hart hires: sometimes good coaches look terrible when looking for a poorly performing head coach.

Lewis is interesting: pretty young (30s) to be a defensive coordinator, but he's bounced around a lot (though generally in an upward trajectory), according to his bio.

Lewis is the son of Sherm.  Is he still at Weber State?  Or looking for a job?

According to Coaching Search, he's still with Weber.

Randy Hart has worked out pretty well for us.  I think it's good to have some veteran coaches around that aren't gunning to be head coaches and looking for the next open seat on the carousel.

My sentimental favorite is still Darrien Gordon.

if Lewis missing from Weber website tonight - FrankO - 02-17-2014

when he was still on it this morning, I think we likely know who our new DB coach is

FWIW, Lewis is in fact Sherm,'s son... was an assistant to the NFL Green Bay DB coach and also was a 'quality control' assistant at GB... then his trajectory took him to DB coach, then DB coach + Defensive Coordinator at Weber (Ogden)... 33 years old, up and comer category

went to St Augustine HS in San Diego, still holds the career pass break-up record at San Diego State

Good one Frank, on the Weber State Site

Re: new defensive backs coach - washingtonismoney - 02-18-2014

FWIW, rival coaching news site Football Scoop has four candidates being considered, including Akina (though doesn't name names): https://twitter.com/footballscoop/status/435882996734763008

I'll take Eric Lewis. I think its important we attempt to replace the recruiting ability of Sanford

Re: new defensive backs coach - StanFan88 - 02-19-2014

Whomever gets the job will have his hands full.

- Replacing Ed Reynolds with either Hoffpauir or a group of unprovens including a former QB and a former WR.
- Hoffpauir replacing Amanam and nickel looks like a good idea if he isn't playing FS
- Potentially having to replace Carter who is rumored to be on "sabbatical" (no confirmation anywhere)

Hope he gets hired quickly so he can get into camp and start developing this talent

Feel better now?

I thought Yvonne was unhappy about propagation of unsubstantiated rumor in this string (a rumor I'm guilty of asking about in the Whitfield to safety string).

Re: new defensive backs coach - yvonne - 02-19-2014

No, the Internet (and this message board) has lots of unsubstantiated rumors.  :)

Kathy's our resident copy editor. Garvin is in charge of harassing her.

Re: new defensive backs coach - terry - 02-19-2014

Eric Lewis worked with Lance Anderson at Bucknell in 2002. Lewis replaced Derek Mason as Bucknell's DB coach that season. Mason had left Bucknell to take a job at Utah.

Here's Lewis' full bio:

2012-13  Weber State, DB coach and, in 2013, defensive coordinator
2010-11  Morgan Stanley, San Jose
2009      Eastern Michigan, defensive coordinator
2008      Louisville, CB coach
2006-07  Green Bay Packers, defensive quality coach
2003-05  Ball State, safeties coach
2002      Bucknell, DB coach
2001      Michigan State, graduate assistant
2000      Salomon Smith Barney
1999      Morgan Stanley

So....is he going to be coaching DBs or giving financial advice?

Re: new defensive backs coach - scorecard - 02-20-2014

Maybe he got confused when his dad told him to go learn about the value of the nickel and the dime.  As long as Morgan Stanley taught him how to avoid 4th quarter losses, I'm good with it.

Hopefully both. They all need to learn how to manage their money. They don't learn in college and unless their family teaches them, it is a critical skill. Those lucky enough to become a pro and sign a big contract, may have to know enough about managing money to be able to hire someone that will it do it well for them. I think these kids learn more from their coaches about life than just football so having a coach that did more than football is a positive to me.

What publius said. Can't be stated enough. I would recommend maybe diversifying a bit in indices (e.g. some emerging markets as well as domestic), but really that's only going to get you a little bit more. The key is to minimize your expenses -- you don't need a financial advisor, where you = 99.9% of human beings worldwide.
