The life and times of Vanderbilt's coaching staff -

Unfortunately it appears Mason's coaching staff has not gotten off to a great start.
First, Jon Haskins -- Vandy's director of player personnel (and former Stanford staffer) -- leaves a couple weeks after being hired, for reasons and destinations unknown:

Then, Vavae Tata -- a grad assistant at Stanford and now defensive line coach at Vandy -- gets arrested for DUI (and also attempted to flee the scene of the crime):

Haskins' Loose Cannon rep - Redrum - 02-18-2014
Haskins has moved many times and a had a very varied series of jobs around college athletics. It's not decisively shown, but maybe the driver for all this changing is Haskins and an impulsive personality. Whatever, he hasn't followed a conventional assistant's career path. Dir. of Player Personnel at an SEC school is nothing to walk away from on a whim if one is trying to build a career. And now he's done it twice, once at Florida and now Vandy. Maybe something about strong personality head coaches just gets under his skin.Â
Or, maybe things are happening in the rest of his life that made leaving Vandy necessary. He got a lot of respect for his contributions in his first Stanford stint.

He's in charge of recruiting wherever he's gone right?

Maybe Mason is in way way over his head.

Don't think he's made any mis-steps yet. Has gotten high praise for increasing this year's recruiting class with only 2 weeks to recruit, from 7 commits to 22 LOIs with good quality players (including one 4-star Stanford academic cast-off). Seems to have put together a good coaching staff, including former UCLA head coach Karl Dorrell as OC. Tata had a DUI as an undergrad at UCLA, but that was a long time ago so probably can't criticize Mason hiring him now.

Yeah...it sounds more like a bunch of bad luck and timing to me. Hope it works out for him and he gets nobody we want in the South.

Tata might not coach this season, per Mason:
Quote: Vanderbilt: Derek Mason told a Nashville radio station Friday that suspended defensive line coach Vavae Tata will not coach this season but then added Friday night, "I went beyond what I was supposed to say. I'll just stick by my statement that he's suspended right now."

The bad spin on this: Vanderbilt is spiraling out of control, losing a bunch of recruits at the end of the cycle, and now losing coaches in the new regime.
The positive spin: Mason recovers on the recruiting front as well as anyone could expect, and now he's sending a clear message with the suspension of Vavae Tata that bad behavior won't be tolerated.
Given my positive feelings about Mason, I certainly hope the latter is closer to the mark.

Looks like Vandy's hiring Utah State's DL coach:

Well since we're talking Vandy coaches, we may as well talk about their ex-coach.
