Tracking the season ticket sales -
washingtonismoney - 02-18-2014
Just thought this would be worth tracking.
Last year we renewed 25k:
https://twitter.com/StanfordFball/status/321435204881362944
We sold 32k total:
http://thecardboard.org/board/index.php/topic,8024.msg63453.html#msg63453
As we know, the even-year slate is not-so-great and this year is no exception; that may account for some of the big swings in attendance from year to year. So it'll be interesting to track the season ticket numbers.
On Feb. 3 we were "approaching" 7k renewed:
https://twitter.com/GoStanford_Tix/status/430459871020851200
Feb. 7 we "passed" 8.3k:
https://twitter.com/GoStanford_Tix/status/431863719367151616
On the 18th we "charged through" 10k:
https://twitter.com/GoStanford_Tix/status/435890991766044672
For sake of simplicity, let's assume that the number is exactly equal to the bound they've mentioned. (Obviously the verb they've used indicates a renewal number above or below the anchor they've established. But it's probably not too far off -- I think.)
So in the four days between the 3rd and the 7th, we had approx. 1.3k renew, which means approx. 325/day.
In the 11 days between the 7th and the 18th, we had approx. 1.7k renew, which means approx. 154/day, which means the rate (apparently?) has slowed down a bit, which is to be expected. I wonder where we top out at?

I think season tickets will still sell out but it will take time.
Students have to be the ones most frustrated - they miss USC and only get half the schedule. AD ***REALLY*** needs to do something about that it's ridiculous.

The students could get internships in Northern California. Or opt to end their internships in August and stay with friends around campus for the first few games. Those solutions are far more likely to work than banking on the AD to "do something" when there really are few, if any, viable options to fix the schedule problem.
As a bonus, those that are near campus in early September can catch volleyball, field hockey and soccer. Since those teams also start their seasons in late August before the quarter begins.

The only thing the AD can do about this is drop the ND game. Us and USC both having late-season OOC matchups means that using that game to fill the early-season hole makes too much sense not to do. I think the options are really either the USC game or a week 3 bye. We're kind of screwed there.
Also, in 2012 didn't they just open housing early for students who wanted to go to the game? There were plenty there, though obviously not as many as if the game were in late September.

Hear hear!! You have hit on one of my pet peeves, Stupac2. ND screws up the schedule in several ways. Why does Stanford have to play early season conference games especially in even numbered years? have to save an October date to travel to South Bend rather than play a conference game or take a bye. Notre Dame is also a prime reason that the home schedule in odd years is so attractive compared to even years. But there is no chance to move ND home game to even years since the Irish play at USC in even years.
I don't think that the "history" or "tradition" of the rivalry (such as it is) justifies its continuation. I wish that Stanford would drop ND. But we'll have to grit and bear it for a while. The games are scheduled through 2019.

Spiny, if we keep beating the Hunchbacks, they will drop us.

I definitely see it as a double-edged sword. Playing that game guarantees us exposure, and in years where our other two OOC games are against bad teams (like this year) we still get a pass. We don't need to worry about teams dropping us because we're too good (as happens to Oregon every now and then), but on the other hand we have little flexibility. I also really loathe that domers compare ND to Stanford as though the schools were equals. From the AD's perspective it's also nice it's going to be a hot ticket even in our down years.
So while I can see the argument for dropping it, and sometimes want to myself (I'm pretty ambivalent about it), I don't think it'll happen.

if we did drop the ND game what would become of the Legends Trophy? :)

I'm in total agreement. ND was able to dictate the terms of the contract when we were a lot weaker. It's a good draw, but it would be a good draw no matter when it was played. We need to renegotiate the contract, or drop them altogether. We may not have a lot of clout individually, but I bet we and SC together could twist their arm.

As I understand it, ND is trying to dictate terms now. They want a higher proportion of the games to be played at ND.

I like the ND rivalry but no where near enough to agree anything other than a 50/50 home and away split.Â

Really? There is no way on God's green earth that we should ever play anything other than home-and-home against ND. If we agree to play two-for-one, I will be incensed.

Not only should Stanford refuse to play more games at N.D. than at Stanford, Stanford should say no more Thanksgiving weekend games if you want to play at Stanford. Make N.D. play at Stanford in mid-October, the same time Stanford plays at N.D.Â

If the AD capitulates to this bullying, he ought to be drawn and quartered. We are of much more value to UDG than UDG is to us, and there are a lot more attractive potential Home/Away opponents than they could even imagine in South Bend.

They won't agree to that, so demanding that would be the same as dropping them. I also don't think that would solve anything in terms of our scheduling problem, as long as the game isn't in the first 3 (maybe 4) weeks we'll still have to have an early conference game or bye.

I agree.
I'd guess they want home and home with a "neutral site" game thrown in every few years where the "neutral site" game always takes the place of a Stanford home game.

Over the last few years, ND has played neutral site games at the Meadowlands, Yankee Stadium, AT&T (Jerry Jones) Stadium, the Alamo Dome and FedEx Field. They have games in 2014 at Lucas Oil Stadium in Indianapolis and at FedEx Field. ND only plays 3 true road games. Clearly they are trying to create more brand awareness in parts of the country where they recruit. Why would Stanford want to help them by agreeing to a "neutral" site game that will probably be 70-80% Domer fans? Another reason I loathe the Irish.

If they want to play a game somewhere other than Stanford or South Bend, how about somewhere in England?

The Pac-12 is tough enough. Stanford could replace Notre Dame with Duke on the schedule for all I care, if that is what it takes to hang on to every last home game.

we should never agree to any series with them where less than 50% of the game are at Stanford Stadium. I'd also be just fine with dropping them from the schedule as after three trips to South Bend I feel no need for a fourth trip.
