This off season will be a little easier than most.

One of my best friends is Uruguayan, so at least I'll have a team to cheer for when we lose. :-[
I pick the home team, but wouldn't be surprised if either of its neighbors win.

Yeah, the ladies in my family have a soft spot for D. Forlan as well, Yvonne....
Man, I loved Uruguay last time around, even though they were pretty hated.
Yet another hand of God....

Who says football isn't the Beautiful Game?
Interestingly, I watched the Uruguay-Ghana game with my Uruguayan friend's son, whose father happens to be Argentine. Somehow, that Hand of God game didn't feel nearly as painful as the first.

The World Cup should be fascinating, if only to see idiot savant Jurgen Klinsmann at work. (YOU ESS EHH YOU ESS EHH YOU ESS EHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH).

OK...you all screwed this thread up beyond repair. I'm taking my link and going home.

Well, if Klinsmann could help see his home country off, I wouldn't cry.

Impressive. I wasn't able to take back my "This Andrew Luck cat is full of fail" and "Johnny D. Will Take Us to the Final Four in Four Years" threads when I saw they weren't going along as planned....

I think JK is at least open to the idea of figuring out how to actually use and develop midfield players, and we are slowly developing a crop of them who might have an impact in 4-8 years. Still haven't figured out what style of play we want to have.Â
For those of us who like the sport, it's been a wonderful slow ride since 1994. Damn. 20 years.

The day the US beat Brazil ended up being one of the worst days of my life, and it had nothing to do with what was going on on the pitch. I was a passenger in the first of three car accidents I'd suffer. It was in a Southern California city called Los Osos. (Should have known better than to go there. ???)

All I know is, I'm somehow looking at a situation where I have to root for Eddie Johnson for both club
and country. I'm not sure how this occurred, but I'm not happy with it.

I think it may be no coincidence that, given the title of this thread, a discussion of soccer has broken out. Sorry, just have never gotten into it much. There are some sports, hockey for instance, that I have to see live in order to get enthused. It is true that among the greatest experiences I have ever had watching a sports event was the Mexico/Italy World Cup Match at RFK Stadium. The athleticism of the players is jaw-dropping!

Heh. There is no satisfactory response to this gripe.Â

To bring the discussion back to Stanford (sort of)...
In 1984 I attended a Summer Olympics soccer match between Brazil and West Germany at Stanford Stadium. The Brazilian fans were awesome with their party-throughout-the-match. At the half, they had some traditionally costumed dancers from Brazil and Germany. The crowd cheered the samba and booed the liederhosen, which must explain why Brazil won.
I know that they had some World Cup matches at the old Stanford Stadium twenty years ago, but I guess the new stadium would not be an option for future World Cups/Olympics with its limited seating?

I believe it was in the mix when the U.S. bid for the '18 and '22 World Cups. However, the Santa Clara 49ers stadium would probably be more likely to garner any big-time soccer matches.
New Stanford Stadium is also a great stadium for soccer. I saw a Chelsea-Club America friendly there a few years back; John Terry won the match with a vicious header off of a corner.

When I read the title of this thread, I thought that the answer was going to be "Stanford men's basketball vs. USC." It was painful to watch the 1st half of that game. The Pac 12 Network broadcasters showed no halftime highlights because they could not find any. Soccer would be more compelling.

In 1984, the Brazilian supporters stayed in Los Gatos. Could they party? Yeah, I guess so. A very popular local tavern in Los Gatos is C. B. Hannegan's. the Brazilians went there to party on the first night there, and Hannegan's ran out of booze...at 9:30 p.m.
