Harbaugh's drive-people-crazy ability is unmatched - washingtonismoney - 02-21-2014

The Browns nearly traded for him over the offseason, according to reports: http://www.csnbayarea.com/49ers/report-browns-nearly-acquired-harbaugh-49ers-trade

The really curious part is what would've happened had he left:
Quote:League sources have told CSNBayArea.com that 49ers defensive line coach Jim Tomsula would likely be the team’s next coach if Harbaugh were to leave.

The gap between Greg Roman's reputation and the willingness of teams to actually hire him is apparently quite large.

He accepted the Kansas job.

At least in the world of the internet,Roman's rep has taken a nose dive since the 49ers offense has had a similar trajectory to that of Stanford over the last couple years.

A couple of thoughts.

First, on Greg Roman.  Greg Roman hasn't really had a trajectory, it's been more of a flat line, the model of consistency.  In 2010, the last year of Singletary, the 49ers scored 281 offensive points.  Roman was brought on, and in the three years since his offenses have scored 361, 372 and 375 points.  What's interesting is the way he did it.  Year one, solely Alex Smith at QB.  He took 99% of the snaps.  Year two, Alex starts nine games and Kaep starts seven games.  Each have exactly 218 passing attempts.  Year three, Alex gets it all.

Second, on Colin Kaepernick.  What's really interesting is that Kaepernick regressed ever so slightly in most of the key metrics.  Just slightly, but he regressed in YPA, YPC, Int. Avg, QBR.  He improved dramatically in losing fumbles, same number of fumbles with twice as many plays as 2012.  His Avg Yards per attempt led the NFL in 2012.  Net yards per attempt dropped by about 10%, from 7.27 to 6.52.  QB Rating dropped from 98.3 to 91.6.  Rushing dropped from 6.6 ypc to 5.7 ypc.  Worst passing in the NFL, btw.  Does that mean bad QB, bad receivers, bad protection or bad coaching?  How much of it is Kaepernick, how much is Harbaugh, how much is Roman, how much is the line?

Third, on Harbaugh and Trent Baalke.  For a team to even consider trading their ridiculously successful head coach is tantamount to admitting that something isn't working.  And by all accounts, Harbaugh is the one who nixed it.  Was this Baalke firing across his bow?  Does he really want to trade him, or is this positioning for a contract extension?  FWLIW, the Niners had their best regular season record in Harbaugh's first season, 13-3 followed by 11-4-1 and 12-4.  Roman may have plateaud, but so has Harbaugh.

I don't think you can "plateau" at 10+ win seasons in the NFL, being able to do that year after year is incredible. Making at least the NFC championship game every year is too. I'm not saying that everything is peachy in SF, but Harbaugh hasn't really plateaued in any meaningful sense, since he's been pretty wildly successful.

I must not know what "plateau" means.  I thought it meant verb (used without object), pla·teaued, pla·teau·ing.  "to reach a state or level of little or no growth or decline".  And after seasons of 13-3, 11-4-1 and 12-4, I thought it fit that definition.

Re: Harbaugh's drive-people-crazy ability is unmatched - stupac2 - 02-21-2014

I'm just saying, calling it a plateau when it's basically as well as it's possible to do in the NFL is facile. It's like saying that Bill Belichick has plateaued. Sure, but it's a plateau that more than half the league would love to attain.

You are aware that the 49ers could have played another game this year, and haven't won said game in nearly 20 years, right? It's not as far as they can go, and Harbaugh has NOT arrived.

Actually, in Roman's third year, Colin Kaepernick got it all. By then, Alex Smith was the Kansas City Chiefs QB.

Shock of all shocks, this story isn't true: https://twitter.com/JedYork/status/437001873011142656

Maybe York is lying, but the whole story seemed so bizarre that I kinda doubt it.

Re: Harbaugh's drive-people-crazy ability is unmatched - tfeldstein - 02-22-2014

Don't know about details but AFAIK Jim told Kansas he was coming and then his deal with Stanford was refashioned and he stayed. Although Jim was offered another year (The Fiesta Bowl Season) at a brobdingnagian number, that probably would have been it as his half life is very short.

Re: Harbaugh's drive-people-crazy ability is unmatched - Hurlburt88 - 02-23-2014

I was always thrilled with the Harbaugh hired & how he got us turned around, but never expected any loyalty.  Underscores how much long-term value Shaw can deliver to not only the football program but to the whole university if his stay ends up being measured in decades versus years.  Ridiculous hope??? maybe . . . but then I never envisioned this run of BCS bowl games!!!

Re: Harbaugh's drive-people-crazy ability is unmatched - needle - 02-23-2014

At the time, I think I probably gave Harbaugh a fan grade of a C for how he publicly handled the ongoing drama of his potentially imminent departure.  The Kansas thing was kept pretty low key, all things considered. I seem to recall Harbaugh saying at one point he hoped to stick around for 10 years or so. Who bought that? No one who really followed the situation very closely, but the message got delivered with the right tenor to have at least a shred of sincerity--that, at least, Stanford wasn't just a way station to a better gig anywhere else. Comments from I think John H. and maybe even Jack H. about how Jim H. really dug the Stanford culture also helped ameliorate any simmering fan anger about the flirtatious nature of Jimbo.

But it's night and day the difference between Harbaugh and Shaw already on this front. The message, delivered very forcefully and repeatedly, is that Shaw is a Stanford coach first and foremost. That never came close to happening with Harbaugh.

Also just guessing that Harbaugh isn't a guest at the Michael Thomas wedding. Fun to read on Twitter about all the former Stanford players showing up for the occasion. Looks like some really tight friendships are enduring. That's always great to see.  Michael Thomas was always a favorite of mine to watch on the field and he seems to have been a popular guy among his teammates. I will always root especially hard for guys of this era who committed to Stanford when football was really less than stellar.

We all believe this but it's also worth saying again: Harbaugh deserves credit for the turnaround but so do guys like MT3.

I don't know anything about the relationship between Harbaugh and Thomas. However, the 49ers did sign Thomas and give him a paycheck for the better part of two seasons. That's not so bad.

It appears that "the situation is even worse than is being portrayed in the media"

I think Harbaugh will be dealt for some draft picks.  This may be an exception to the rule that "winning fixes everything".

I really doubt Harbaugh gets traded. I pretty much agree with Barnwell: http://grantland.com/features/the-curious-case-of-jim-harbaugh/

My gut feel is that Harbaugh is a much more valuable asset that Baalke.  At the same time, he clearly sounds as if he is running roughshod through the organization.

Re: Harbaugh's drive-people-crazy ability is unmatched - washingtonismoney - 02-25-2014

Considering one of Shaw's rationales (at least in radio interviews) about staying with Stanford is that his wife wants to stay in the Bay Area, Shaw-to-49ers would actually be plausible.
