Waiting for Akina - washingtonismoney - 02-24-2014

Reportedly, per Coaching Search, Shaw offered the job for Akina, but Akina wants to wait a couple weeks to decide. Can't say I'm psyched about offering a job to a guy who (apparently?) isn't too fired up about accepting it: http://coachingsearch.247sports.com/Article/Coaching-Transactions-Coaching-Search-Ticker-176590

Re: Waiting for Akina - zedcom - 02-24-2014

Agree it seems a bit long to think the decision over unless his wife/family wanted some time getting comfortable with the idea of moving to the Bay Area. He has lived in Honolulu, HI, Seattle, WA, Calgary, Alberta, Tucson, AZ, and Austin, CA so don't think culture shock should be an issue. Maybe sticker shock is a bigger concern. Clearly the folks in Texas think highly of Akina and worry about him returning to recruit kids to Stanford against UT. Another thought (purely a strawman) is that, since he had an Asst. HC title under Mack Brown, he may think he's more qualified for a DC spot.

Someone took notes of Shaw's talk from last year and I found this apropos:

Quote:Was struck by what the Colts said about Chuck Pagano when they hired him. Said if the Ravens had gone to the Super Bowl, they probably would’ve hired someone else. If that’s the right guy for your organization, you can’t wait 14 days? The difference between hiring the right guy and the wrong guy is the difference between winning and losing. Coach Shaw is willing to wait a very long time, sometimes until after spring football, until he feels like he found the right guy.

Re: Waiting for Akina - Beeg_Dawg - 02-24-2014

Agree with "waiting for the right guy", but once you find him how long do you wait for him to say yes? IMO, a  week is plenty of time under the circumstances.  Two weeks feels like he is waiting for a different/better offer.

If I'm Shaw, I would make it clear I was not suspending the job search waiting for him (Akina) to say yes.  No point in losing two more weeks putting the search on hold and then have your first choice say no.

Whoever it is, hope he's thirsty - Redrum - 02-24-2014

Because with Spring ball session #1 about to start, he'll be drinking from the firehose trying to get established and contribute.  For the players, it will be strange taking instructions from a guy who calls you "Hey, you!  Whatsyername!  Don't do that!  Do it this way."

Hey Dawg... nice to see you in these parts.

Some of this may be negotiation, hoping that the offer will be sweetened.

As you well know, waiting for the Bootleg to get back up is truly waiting for Godot. Only true Stanford fans need a fix before they get their act together. This site fits the bill.

Re: Waiting for Akina - BostonCard - 02-24-2014

You might even find you don't go back... though I do miss the CEB.  Perhaps I should start a thread about what the hell is happening in Venezuela.  At least Garvin might be interested.

I'd be interested, and I'll bet Garvin would even toss in his two cents worth.

Caracas is closer to DC than Las Vegas, but you wouldn't know about the meltdown if you didn't dig for it.

Given how fast our DC's get snapped up, I don't think he would have long to wait.

BC: Start a new thread. Lots of good topics from Venezuela and Ukraine to 2014 elections. Go for it.
