Spring practice thread - washingtonismoney - 02-24-2014

Ryan Burns (disciplinary), Ty Montgomery and David Parry (injuries) to miss the first session of spring ball, per Kyle Bonagura:

Re: Spring practice thread - CompSci87 - 02-24-2014

Ouch, not a good look for a QB to be excluded for disciplinary reasons.

Re: Spring practice thread - Spiny_Norman - 02-24-2014

Spring roster is posted - http://www.gostanford.com/SportSelect.dbml?&DB_OEM_ID=30600&SPID=127013&SPSID=749928

Dillon Bonnell not returning for a 5th year which opens up the Ogre role for a younger player per Lombardi.

Re: Spring practice thread - BostonCard - 02-25-2014

It appears the offending post has been removed by the admins, which doesn't bother me, as it was rank speculation at best and inflammatory at worst.  In addition, per David Lombardi's tweet:

David Lombardi ‏@DavidMLombardi  3h
Ryan Burns will miss the 1st session of spring ball. "Disciplinary issue." Will return fighting for Stanford backup QB spot in 2nd session.

It seems unlikely the unwarranted speculation was true; otherwise he would likely have been suspended indefinitely pending the outcome of an investigation.  The fact that the suspension is for a definite period of time suggests that the issue is known to the coaches, and clearly not what the poster was speculating.

Re: Spring practice thread - ChicagoCard - 02-25-2014

This roster still has Lloyd, Whitfield and Lueders at their old positions, and two tight ends wearing #82. Not sure players' listed weights are actually updated.

Re: Spring practice thread - OutsiderFan - 02-25-2014

There is no need for Ty Montgomery to participate in both Spring sessions, even if he were completely healthy.  Kind of like Stepfan Taylor's last Spring on the farm.  Ditto Parry, and I would argue Peat, Henry Anderson, and Alex Carter have no reason to participate either, given the risk/reward.

Re: Spring practice thread - needle - 02-25-2014

Quote: There is no need for Ty Montgomery to participate in both Spring sessions, even if he were completely healthy.

Could not disagree more. WRs and QBs need to work on their timing, especially on a team like Stanford that desperately needs to improve what I would call it's timing passing game (the short and intermediate routes where the ball may be thrown even before a wideout has made a cut to a position on the field).

On balance, I would say the news regarding Montgomery is positive, as it looks like there's little doubt he'll be ready to go for fall camp at least (Lombardi  tweeted that Montgomery will be "full-go in a brace" by Stanford's second spring football session).

Bonnell had that role in '12, but Garnett owned it in'13 keeping Bonnell off the field. With Garnett potentially starting at LG, the role will be open if they choose to keep running the elephant package out there.

Re: Spring practice thread - terry - 02-25-2014

Murphy, Garnett, Caspers, and Shuler all got some playing time in certain offensive packages last year. This year, all of them could be starters. That opens the door for Reihner, Oser, Bright, Austin, or Davidson to get some snaps.

We're thin at QB for the next two weeks. Burns is sitting out, Lloyd is playing safety, Olson is graduating, and Chryst isn't on campus yet. That leaves us with just Hogan and Crower at QB for now. Tavita Pritchard and Joe Ashfield might need to take a turn throwing the ball in some drills.

Re: Spring practice thread - BobK - 02-25-2014

Sanford had the best arm    :)

Re: Spring practice thread - FGkickingiswinning - 02-26-2014

Pratt definitely has the best arm on the first session spring roster  :)

Terry - Tucker will undoubtably be included in the big packages next year.

Drukarev interviews Lance Anderson: http://stanford.rivals.com/content.asp?CID=1614310

Re: Spring practice thread - OutsiderFan - 02-27-2014

Per the LA interview with Drukarev, let's talk Linebackers...

The move of Hemschoot back to ILB seems to be more about Peter Kalambayi and Mike Tyler than Hemschoot per se, which to me is really good news for that line of defense.  Nobody on the Spring roster has me more intrigued than Kalambayi, Tyler, and Kevin Palma.

Here's a quick perspective on the Linebackers to get the conversation started.

ILB
Tarpley - Obvious starter and leader
Martinez - likely starter, but you never know
Hemschoot - potential starter, but will play a lot no matter
Palma - does he have the most upside of anyone on Spring roster?  Potential starter?
Davis - will he step-up and seize a spot in the playing rotation, or will he be odd man out again?

As Alfieri, Perez, and Okereke are added, there will be some nice reinforcements in Summer.

OLB
Vaughters - kind of the Tarpley of the OLBs; veteran and rock solid if not spectacular
Anderson - would seem to be the starter; has made more big plays than Vaughters with less PT
Kalambayi - has Stanford had a guy more athletically gifted at this position?
Tyler - after coming in at 220, Tyler looks to have added weight; love his effort on H.S. vids

Don't know who the 3rd team would be in Spring, but unlike the ILBs there doesn't seem to be obvious OLB reinforcements coming in Summer.  Veach seems to need to more weight like Tyler did his first year.  My guess is one of Okereke and Alfieri gets moved to OLB, and I'll guess it's Okereke, and/or does Davis get moved back outside?  That would give Stanford five or six  potential OLBs.  They started with five ready to play in 2013 (Murphy, Vaughters, Lueders, Anderson, Hemschoot). This 2014 group will be a lot younger, but probably be more overall athletically gifted.

It does seem Lueders could have been moved back to OLB, so the fact he hasn't been suggests the staff feels really good about Kalambayi and Tyler, and probably wants more DL depth when push comes to shove.

Re: Spring practice thread - socalstanfan1 - 02-27-2014

Pure speculation on my part, but Hemschoot seems to me to be suited almost for the role Jeff Fuller played for the Niners years ago, before a tragic injury shortened his career. That is, Fuller was a fantastically gifted player who was a bit too small for LB, and generally considered a bit too big for S. But the Niners got him on the field and played him all over the place: sometimes dropping into coverage, sometimes rushing the passer, sometimes as an extra safety in the box to stop the run. I recall thinking he was one of the most disruptive players in the league because he could play anywhere in the back seven and cause troubles for the offense.

Hemschoot may not be quite as physically gifted as Fuller, but he has a lot of the same qualities: fast, hits hard, athletic enough to cover TEs, physical enough to stuff the run. I'd love to see the coaches get him on the field and move him around to fill different roles.

Re: Spring practice thread - pcgoode - 02-27-2014

Where does the much heralded Noor Davis fit in? Has he seen the field yet?

Re: Spring practice thread - BobK - 02-27-2014

ILB for Noor.

Re: Spring practice thread - OutsiderFan - 02-27-2014

I knew I was forgetting someone!  Added in Davis to ILB, retrospectively.

Last year we used Hemschoot as a big nickel back. Some of our opponents brought in an extra WR to get us in the nickel, then they threw a bubble screen (or ran off-tackle) to get a physical mismatch with a bigger blocker matched up against our regular nickel back, Usua Amanam. We countered that by using Hemschoot in Amanam's spot.
