Nice piece on si.com on Stanford football - AtlantaBadger - 03-13-2014

Stewart Mandel has this nice write-up about Stanford football on the Sports Illustrated website today.

I saw this quote, "Apparently we can play defense without Derek Mason, Shayne Skov and Trent Murphy," somewhere else, but I still love reading it every time.

Salty David Shaw is the best; sadly he only rarely indulges. Hopefully we'll get some shots at Sarkisian in the fall.

Wait! What? - Redrum - 03-14-2014

One hates to nitpick gifts like Mandel's,  but Kyle Murphy was a starter at RT last year, not just a part time Jumbo or Ogre player.  And, because I love Shane Skov,  I'd hate to see him have tomahawked haircut,  which was how Gen. Custer left this world.  But I will miss his Mohawk haircut presence and attitude.

Really?
I was under the impression that Cam Fleming started at RT every game last year.
The official site bio says Murphy started two games in 2012 as an injury replacement. Doesn't mention any 2013 starts.

You're right. I'm wrong. Brain fart - Redrum - 03-14-2014

But I am right on "tomahawked" haircuts and that's what's important.

Also, in the meantime,  I followed the Mandel link trail down to one where he favors the early signing period for college football.  Seems to buy into the mantra "good-for-athletes-good-for-coaches" argument,  although the only specific evidence he cites is a complaint from Ohio St., of all places, which moans about the cost of having their assistant coaches fly out to visit OSU's high school commits to keep them on board.  Talk about  modern problems.  Right up there with the new Audi being too long for some condo garages.

Thanks AtlantaBadger for sharing. I take it you're a Wisconsin fan?

I am a Wisconsin fan -- grew up in Madison and went to UW for college and law school.  Now live in Atlanta.  But I am a Stanford football fan because my son is the big fella in the photo at the beginning of the Mandel article.

P.S. -- and no, that was not me in the video!  How dare they attack Bucky!

Lots of reasons to be excited about your son, and I agree with mandell that he could be our next pass rushing fiend.  Scary to think of how good he could be if healthy for the whole season.  Given the practice reports, sounds like the knee is fully healed.

Welcome to you, AtlantaBadger! You're not the only Wisconsin native around here. I went to Madison East High too many years ago to think about... Then went to Stanford for undergraduate school and basically never went home. (At least that the way my mother always told it.)

Please don't be a stranger around here. We're a pretty mellow group and would appreciate your perspective.

Welcome!  We are very much looking forward to seeing more Henry this season.

So who did you cheer for in the 2013 Rose Bowl?

BTW that Georgia Aquarium: MOST IMPRESSIVE TOURIST ATTRACTION that I've been to that was meant to be a tourist attraction.

Re: Nice piece on si.com on Stanford football - AtlantaBadger - 03-14-2014

Of course I cheered for Stanford in the 2013 RB, but it was fun that at the Parent Reception that the Rose Bowl hosts the day before the game (a very nice tradition, I might add), I was the only one in the room singing and dancing along to both teams' fight songs!

I attended the 1999 Rose Parade with my Bruin wife. As the Wisconsin cheer squad paraded by, I joined some other Bruin fans in a UCLA cheer (hey, when in Rome...). Bucky strolled over and sprayed me with silly string. Looking back, I owe Bucky a big thank you for setting me on the straight and narrow.

My sister went to UW and lived in Madison on Monroe Street (pretty close to Michael's Frozen Custard) for about 15 years, I went to school in Atlanta, and I watch your son play in Palo Alto; so we are almost related.Â
