It's All Over But the Shouting... - 76lsjumb - 03-17-2014

... at least, if I'm reading this right:

Glad to see the guys smiling.  Not so glad to read the seventh paragraph of the story...

Hope we don't lose any recruits...  ;)

Wow.  Just "getting to the NCAA tournament" is the goal?  Not winning the Pac-12, or perish the thought, winning at least one game in the NCAA tournament?

I wonder if Jim Harbaugh ever said the goal was to be "bowl eligible" at Stanford?  No, I don't wonder, because he never said such a thing.  He did say the goal was to "win multiple Rose Bowls" in his first season coming off 1-10.  No, that hasn't happened yet, but I'm sure winning one and being in one in consecutive years wouldn't have happened if the goal was bowl eligibility.

I had a chance to meet and talk with Jim Harbaugh after our 8-5 Sun Bowl season.  I congratulated him on a good season, which was good compared to what we had been experiencing over the past several years. What do you think he said?

He said that it was not good enough. The tone in his voice convinced me that he meant it and I'll bet that is what he told his players too.

And you know what?  Jim Harbaugh was right. The next year we went 12-1 and won the Orange Bowl.  ;D

Just contrast Stanford football's promotional video for 2014 with Muir's attitude:

"The Next Level." Muir's got hypoxia from the thought.

The difference between any bowl game and the NCAA tournament is that a team can win a title as a low seed.  I believe Muir indicated that Dawkins need to get to the tournament, and that was accomplished.

FWIW - One of the big complaints about Monty's program was that the team was unable to find another level in March since they played at their peak all year long.  Here with JD I could imagine the team could play at a level far above their 10 seed for 2 or 3 games.  Admittedly, I can also imagine that New Mexico will win by 20 points on Friday.  And I suspect a 20 point loss to New Mexico is more likely than reaching the Sweet 16.

Here is a win-win for everyone - Imagine that JD takes the team to the Elite 8 or beyond!!  With that kind of run I would suspect that SEC or ACC teams might want to hire him ASAP, and then Muir would have to hire a new coach.

Coaching wisdom we ALL can use - Redrum - 03-17-2014

When my bosses and team members come to me pissed off by my inattention to work and low productivity,  I will simply quote the estimable Johnny Dawkins:

"I've never let expectations define me."

Low-Bar Bernard strikes again:

Quote:"We are indeed excited for Johnny, his staff and most importantly, our student-athletes," Muir said via email Sunday. "They have all worked so very hard to participate in the Madness. It should be a most memorable week ahead."

Just one week? And why will it be so memorable?

You guys need to lighten up.
I am perfectly happy with the idea that these guys have achieved something by getting into the tournament.

Support the team then we shall see.

Muir did NOT say that the team simply had to make the tournament.  He made two statements:
- He wants them to be playing "deep into March" which means the second weekend of the tournament.  Not just getting in
- He also want them to be contending for a conference title, something Dawkins has completely failed to do in six years

I am going to take Muir at his word.  If Stanford bows out in the first round he needs to fire Dawkins.  Squeaking in is not good enough.  When your best conference record in six years is one game over .500, that's not good enough.  Winning less than one-third of conference games decided by 5 points or less is not good enough - and is one of the principal reasons for the other issues.  Blowing over a dozen leads in the final five minutes is not good enough either.
