The scary thing is that it sounds as if a group of rogue boosters could operate something like this system without the coaches really knowing the scope or nature of the activity.

Here's why that system wouldn't work at Stanford- Stanford boosters want their names on the record so their kids can get that tiny little boost in admissions! Being totally in the shadows doesn't help that endeavor.

The only thing that was news to me in that story was the part how the bag men will stop paying recruits when they want a coach out.  Brutal.

It's also a screaming example of why to me, the Pac-12, Big Ten, Big 12, and ACC should let the SEC operate as its own entity and not participate in competition with those schools.  Would also be good for the NCAA to just go away.  The organization has zero credibility.

Am I the only one here who thinks this could be the premise of a terrific HBO series: Bag Men.  It's got morally compromised characters you could easily empathize with and even root for.  The rogue boosters would serve as the mainstays.  Coaches and players come and go.  But the Alabama Bag Men that grease the wheels will always be there.

I'm already picturing one story arc, where they are recruiting this blue chip player.  For some reason, he seems immune to their bribes and favors.  Is it because he's already silently committed to the other big local university?  The bread crumbs are there as the story unfolds.  And boom here's the surprise twist: Stanford offers him.

Bag Man 1: "Sh!!!!t, there ain't no amount money we can put together that will make him pass that up."
Bag Man 2: "Well, at least he ain't goin' to Auburn."

If there is an FBS school that does not have Bag Men, it would be us.  After the Sandusky scandal, IIRC there are only 3 FBS schools that have not been found guilty of wrongdoing by the NCAA.  Us, BC, and Northwestern.  IIRC Penn State and Stanford were the only ones that were not even investigated.  So we aren't not just one of the last virgins.  Apparently, we are the only prude.

You know, the article is interesting, but there's a reason it's on SB Nation and not the New York Times. Hard to take it too seriously without any named sources at all.....no facts in there you can actually take to the bank.
