My guess as best chance to continue the streak -
Viking_Guy - 05-09-2014
Women's water polo whupped up on Indiana University 18-2. They'll take on the winner of C.al and Arizona State, who are playing right now. That semifinal will be tomorrow at 3:30 Pacific.
The other semi, as expected, will be the host Women of Troy and UCLA, both of whom had fairly close matches, SC beating UC Irvine 14-11 and UCLA beating UCSD 12-8. That one will be a war.
I think this is probably the best chance of continuing the national championship streak, followed in rough order by men's golf, women's tennis, and men's tennis. (Not sure where to place women's rowing?) Baseball might qualify for the tourney, as they have a not so bad schedule late in the season, but softball probably won't. Women's lacrosse was eliminated today.

Well, I know almost nothing about women's rowing, but I'm certain we have better national championship possibilities in women's rowing than in men's tennis, because we have no chance whatsoever in men's tennis.

I think I am missing something here.
My internet-interpretation-reading-sense tells me that you are making a statement much stronger than an evaluation of the quality of the men's tennis team. Yet I see that they start NCAA tournament play tomorrow morning vs Tulsa.
So, either you really are commenting on the men's tennis team's abiity noting that a #27 seed has no chance to win - or I have completely missed something else.

In my opinion, the women's tennis team has a much better change of defending their title than their #11 seed would suggest. The ranking system in college tennis is all about accumulating points and we began the year at a significant disadvantage in the race for points by not participating in the national indoor tournament in February. We only dropped two matches all year including an extremely close 4-3 decision vs. #5 UCLA. We also walloped #8 Florida 7-0. A key match to watch will be in the round of 16 where we'll likely have a rematch against C.al who we beat 5-2 at their place in March but lost 6-1 at our place in April.
As for our men's tennis team, I have a better chance of being the starting QB for the Colts next year than they do of winning the title.

Stanford men's tennis faced three opponents ranked in the top 5. Stanford lost all three times by a combined score of 15-1, with Stanford trailing in all 5 unfinished matches. Stanford lost to #49 Oregon in the Pac-12 tournament. Stanford has zero chance of winning the NCAA title.

Aha. It was a comment on the quality of the men's tennis team.
My internet-reading-instincts are clearly off today.

Women's rowing has a dark horse chance of winning. We'll see what happens at the Pac-12 championships next weekend when the women meet kal again. Will kal respond to the upset by reclaiming their higher ranking? Or will Stanford continue to find more speed? How will Stanford match up against the rest of the Pac-12? (Because Stanford does not see every Pac-12 team before the Pac-12 championships...) And the east coast is always fast. Brown and tOSU are officially ranked ahead of Stanford in the coaches poll.

There's a ranking system out there using ordinary least squares that also accounts for some rowing-specific conditions. It places Stanford's varsity boat 5th, 1.7sec behind kal, tOSU, UW, and USC. That doesn't say anything about the quality of the 2V8 or the V4 boats, and the team trophy goes to the overall scoring school, but it's an indicator.Â

well, if it was near-zero before for M tennis, it's really zero now:Â lost 4-2 to Tulsa after winning the doubles point (and were about to lose the last point too)

It's the first time Stanford has been eliminated in men's tennis in the first round two years in a row since the championship went to its current format in 1977. Not a good omen.
Go women's water polo!

Acc'd to the website, last year was the
first time SU was eliminated in the first round. At least that was to a higher-seeded team, this year we lost to a lower-seeded team.

Muir needs to take a hard look at the men's tennis situation.

Women's golf did end up finishing 5th in their regional, so they qualify for the championships in Tulsa in two weeks.
And women's tennis just took the doubles point against Long Beach.

How about women's golf? They won the Pac 12. They just advanced out of the regionals to the NCAA Championships. They aren't the best team, but golf is a very unpredictable sport.

Yet that showing still earned 25 Director's Cup points. Stanford's "other streak" (consecutive Director's Cups) was preserved by just 16.5 points last year.
Even though Men's Tennis has substantial room for improvement, it contributes meaningfully to Stanford's overall athletic excellence.
Geaux Cardinal!

Women's tennis, after several close matches in the doubles, hammers Long Beach in singles to win 4-0.
Softball gave up 8 runs in the top of the fifth and fell to Oregon State.
Women's water polo recovered from a 2-0 initial hole and now lead 10-5 going into the fourth quarter.

Final Stanford 12 C.al 8.
After falling behind 2-0 and being tied 4-4, Stanford scored the final 3 goals of the first half and never looked back. They led 12-6 before backing off and subbing late. Good game, and the big late lead let some starters rest late.
Big difference was the strength inside (and one silly Bare move): Stanford scored I think at least 3 penalty shots, one of which was called early in the second half and resulted in the ejection of one of C.al's starters, when she didn't leave the pool after being excluded; the exclusion was her second, and the penalty call ended up being her third, which ended her day.
Hoping for a 5 OT battle of attrition between SC and UCLA.

Actually I'm hoping for a fierce rivalry game between US.C and UCLA with about 3 red cards against each team. Unfortunately, the rule book doesn't seem to cover a 1-game suspension for a red card during postseason, but maybe I just missed it.
I do agree with the announcers that C.al will be a tough match next year. I thought it surprising I didn't hear the announcers mention this was the 38th bear loss in a row to the Cardinal. Announcer Chris Dorst certainly was aware of this.
By the way,
http://www.ncaa.com/video/playlists/sports/waterpolo-women/nc
has videos from some of these matches & older matches. Last year's NC game is there (at 2:04, it is 54 minutes longer than the video of the game against Indiana this year).

Trivia: I am at my favorite Mexican place in Palo Alto, and a bunch of women in Tulsa jackets are at nearby tables. They must be the women's tennis squad, who lost to Long Beach State yesterday.
