Women's Water Polo National championship: The streak continued! - M T - 05-11-2014

Stanford vs UCLA for the streak.
1-2 at the end of the first quarter
3-5 at the half
5-5 at the end of the third quarter
9-5 final

This is a nail biter!  First half had almost no majors called.  Several called in 2nd half.
http://www.ncaa.com/championship/liveplayer/player?gameId=467489

Stanford was down 5-2 in the first half, but scored the next 7 goals.  These ladies really finish hard.  UCLA looked very good in the first half and then Stanford's defense just shut them down.

The last goal was a result of UCLA being in desperation mode, but the others were during play.  No penalty shots in this game.

Re: Women's Water Polo National championship: 3rd qtr 5-5 - Viking_Guy - 05-11-2014

Two straight by the big guns.  Dries just gets into 2 meters and shrugs off all challenges, then Dodson walks into about 5 meters and beats the keeper on the low skip.  7-5 Stanford, 4:25 left.

Best part of the match.  Couldn't believe how Dodson just walked it in.

Re: Women's Water Polo National championship: The streak continued! - Viking_Guy - 05-11-2014

MT-

You're right, the defense was the difference.  In the first half, I was down on Gabby Stone, who let in a couple of long shots (one a lob, the other from about 8 meters) - they were good shots, but they were the kind of shots UCLA's keeper Sami Hill was knocking down.

But in the second half - wow.  As I mentioned, they had ONE good shot in the entire half; everything else was from outside, or if it was inside, it was late in the shot clock and into a forest of field-blocking arms.  Let me put it this way - Stone had to make one save in the second half - it was a good and important one, with the score still 5-5 and Donohoe getting a good look at 2 meters.  But almost every other shot they took was from distance, late in the shot clock, or both.

Most important goal of the game?  Yelizarova with 1 second left in the first half, hitting the inside of the right post only 18 seconds after UCLA had scored to make it 5-2 Bruins.  Second most, Grossman's to tie it with under 5 seconds in the third period.

As someone else said, now hope that all the teams still in action can catch fire - it would be nice to cut further into UCLA's lead, and win another this year.

VG

P.S.  MT - there was a penalty shot.  Maggie Steffens had one saved by Sami Hill which would've put Stanford up 2-0.  Through most of the first half, I was hoping that wouldn't be the key point in the match - Hill had already had a save, and Stanford had hit a post.  The penalty miss was followed by another ball off the post and another UCLA save, so I was thinking the stars were aligned poorly today.

Oh so happy I was wrong.

That was a thrilling match. The ladies showed great resilience in hanging in there after going down early. It's a fun sport to watch, especially when played by world class athletes.

It's nice to have the monkey off the back to keep the streak alive. It would be nice to not have to wait until May to get it out of the way...

Re: Women's Water Polo National championship: The streak continued! - Spiny_Norman - 05-11-2014

I was there and it was spectacular!  What a thrill to be there in person.  I had been to other NCAA tournaments/finals, but I had never seen Stanford hoist the trophy until today.

I will add one other critical point in the game.  I believe that the score was 5-3 in the 3rd period when the referee waved off a UCLA goal because of a contrafoul.  Stanford scored soon thereafter.  Stanford still might have come back to win, but a 3 goal deficit in the 2nd half would have been a big challenge.

Two stories from the post-match ceremony.  After the players had received their individual trophies, the NCAA official called the coaches up to receive the team trophy.  Coach Tanner did not move.  He said very clearly to his players, "Go get your trophy."  He deflected the spotlight to his players.  Coach Tanner and the assistants did not join the group until the photos with the team members and the trophy had been taken.  Finally, it appeared to me that Coach Tanner gave the game ball (that is, one of the actual balls used in the championship match) to Gabby Stone.  Oh and Annika Dries was named the tournament MVP.

One other note.  When the players were introduced at the start of the match, they were all wearing nerd glasses.

Re: Women's Water Polo National championship: The streak continued! - Viking_Guy - 05-11-2014

Spiny--

Wasn't a contra foul; the UCLA player took a direct shot following an ordinary foul from inside 5 meters, which is verboten.  And it was CLOSE - a matter of maybe a foot or 18 inches, but the official was standing directly on the 5 meter line.  But you're right, that call was absolutely critical.

And the women's water polo team, beyond keeping the streak alive, is one of the most supportive teams of their fellow athletes out there - I remember back at the 2012 women's b-ball regional at Fresno, they all came before and after a tournament of their own in Santa Barbara to cheer at both games, dressed in great costumes - I think it was one of the first appearances of the nerd glasses.

One other thing about the game-tying goal - watch the replay, if you get a chance.  The pass from Steffens to set the goal up was absolutely remarkable.  And with all of 5 seconds or so left in the period down a goal.

Thanks, VG.  I was at the other end of the pool and could not clearly understand what the official called to disallow the goal.  I thought it was an exclusion but I guess it was an ordinary foul.  A critical call.

When I was searching for Ann Killion's column earlier today, I stumbled upon this tweet regarding the football team.

One reason I love Stanford: the entire Rose Bowl-bound football team is sitting in the stands to support women's hoops.  Awesome.

I think we need to cut her some slack.

These group of ladies are very special and talented especially with the seniors.  Replacing a strong graduating class is never easy.  Does anyone know who we have coming in next year?  I hope JT and the rest of the coaches recruited another strong and talented class.

I make a brief appearance during the NC trophy ceremony up in the stands in the Nerd Nation t-shirt.

Now, more than ever before, I understand why the newspaper business is in trouble.  I remember reading stories like that when I was a student.  The stories were pretty good at setting the scene and explaining what had happened a day or two earlier.  This story had a similar level of depth and quirky Stanford-oriented detail.

And yet, here in 2014 even water polo can be streamed over the internet.  Even if I didn't watch live, there was plenty of time to catch the replay.  And even if I didn't want to watch a full match, there is a GREAT Youtube video that allows casual fans to feel like they were sitting with the team poolside.

Hard to compete with all of that even if your article is provided for free.

However, there are more things that can be done with text than can be done with video.  Did you learn about WWII from the raw movies of the fighting at the time, or from the articles written about it?  (or did you learn the "Hogan's Heroes" or "Combat!" version of WWII?)

There's been a lot of research at capturing information from video, but it is clear that people are infinitely better at summarizing the events in text (or spoken text).  Maybe someday we'll be able to "summarize" or "document" video automatically, but not yet.  Human-generated documents will be better for search or a quick overview.

Unfortunately, descriptions of events are colored (unintentionally or not) by the (literal & figurative) viewpoint of the viewer, and those are recorded as the history of the events.  I'm sure the Stanford and UCLA accounts of the game differ, which presents challenges for a future analysis of what happened.  Imagine the differences in German versus English accounts of WWII.  Video of events will remove some of that, but will still have issues with the literal viewpoint(s).

I hope newspapers and other periodicals can survive, with some veneer of accurate reporting.
