Why?
The Stanford I know and love is more Nerd Nation than Bling Bling, or at least I so thought.....

We've given out Rings since the Orange Bowl (at least, not sure about the 2000 RB).Â
I got an up close look at a couple of them. One set was handed out at Arrilaga's patio along with a healthy luncheon - if by healthy you mean sumptuous and loaded with enough calories to kill a normal man. I believe Arrilaga financed the early sets - not sure about these.

I think those are a very nice memento for the recent football achievements.Â
I am all in when the foam ring hats hit the bookstore.

I don't see these rings are being counter to the NerdNation culture for Stanford athletics. They aren't excessively bejeweled. And even the Orange Bowl rings I saw, that did have jewels, are fine IMO.

I think the rings are awesome. These players will be wearing them 40 years from now at their Stanford reunion (unless they go on to win a Superbowl). In rodeo, you win a silver and gold tooled belt buckle for a victory. These are coveted for the life of the cowboy and the buckle from the most prestigious win is worn nearly everyday.

Even a Nobel Prize comes with a gold medal to help bring a little bling to your 1.2 million dollars. ;)
Cheers,
