Opponent attrition at N.D. - washingtonismoney - 07-02-2014

Seems one of their incoming freshman won't be making it to campus. It's one way recruiting rankings are deceptive: our guys show up and stay in school; other teams' do not.

So what happened was this kid signed his LOI and was attending classes and was told he wasn't admitted into Notre Dame. Maybe the most incompetent football program in the country IMO. How can you be enrolled in a school without having been approved by admissions? Another top kid in their freshman class tweeted he wished he could rip up the contract he signed. This is really going to set them back on the recruiting trail.

That's a good point, I hadn't thought that through. A real jerk move by that program.

What's the disconnect here?  How can so many recruits be unsatisfied with that place once they arritilling it still seemingly have no problems hauling in elite prospects?  Is it really as simple as the TV contract?

And how DOES someone take classes on campus and then later get told he wasn't admitted to the school?  Is this how low Kelly will stoop to be able to win the signature of a recruit who wants to enroll early?  A serious investigation is in order to find out if this is true in South Bend!

I just read on an Irish fan forum, AKA the preferred online home of the delusional, irrational, and insecure - that Sykes had a 28 ACT.  Something isn't adding up.

Well, this could be seen as an ethical step up for the football factory.  They probably made mistakes like this in the past but simply covered them up in the Office of Special Football Admits.    It makes me wonder if their Associate Vice President of Admissions for Special Athletic Exemptions (AVPOAFSAE) was asleep on the job.

But all kidding aside, this is terrible for the student involved, who might in fact have a great basis for a lawsuit.

This link below has several posts regarding what may have happened concerning Nile Sykes's departure from notre dame. Most think it was a conditional admission that fell through but others state it was about ND not ultimately being a good fit for him.

http://www.irishenvy.com/forums/2014-recruiting-profiles/184935-14-il-lb-nile-sykes-notre-dame-signee-45.html

Situations like this bring up an argument against an early signing period regardless if this is an academic issue or simply a fit issue. The individual most hurt is Sykes and the optics of this situation for Notre Dame look terrible.

I'm guessing this won't put a dent in ND - Redrum - 07-03-2014

Stuff like this is akin to throwing an empty coke can at a moving container ship.  Look,  they killed a kid and the news cameras all went and took artsy shots of candles lit for him in their famous Grotto.  The true believers, and they are legion,  have already bought the "bad fit" explanation and won't even pay attention to the taking-classes-but-not-admitted farce.  If the football program wants mid-year "admits"  because it is a useful recruiting tool [and it IS],  they will continue to have it.  ND will just take a existing academic official, print up an alternative business card identifying him as Dean of Exceptional Student Admissions and cruise on as if nothing happened.

From what I can tell, the player was in summer school at UND, which is open to everyone. It's not as if he was ever enrolled mid-year as a regularly admitted student. Maybe something nefarious occurred, but I'm still waiting to hear convincing evidence of this.

Like Redrum mentioned, there are plenty of other reasons to despise UND, but this really isn't one of them.

Redrum can speak for himself, but that's not how I read his post.

At any rate, even if summer school is some adjunct program for students -- which I doubt, but I'll grant for the purposes of the argument -- this is a low maneuver absent exceptional circumstances. Who's got room for a spare player now, under these late circumstances? Most rosters are set and teams are just beginning to gear up for training camp. Sykes will have to scramble to find a good spot. If N.D. just now decided Sykes doesn't fit their standards, well, that's something they could've and should've communicated earlier -- for Sykes's sake.

(If Sykes had some misbehavior or something of that sort, it's a different story. But the innuendo seems to be implying differently.)
