Lucky to have him on our (Stanford's) side.

Quote:Andreessen recalls a recent conversation in which he asked his father-in-law, if he could invest again, with the same startup enthusiasm–anywhere in the U.S.–where would it be?

Arrillaga didn’t pause a moment: “Oh, the Bay Area, for sure.”

Poor guy. He's clearly missed the memo about taxes and cost of living driving all the businesses out of CA.

I'm glad we guaranteed his scholarship for four years :)

Re: Arillaga - GoodGrief - 07-08-2014

John Arrillaga once called me, and I couldn't have been more thrilled than if it was...well, pretty much anybody.

Around the Harbaugh/Toby era, I mailed a brief note to John Arrillaga at his business address thanking him for all that he has done for Stanford Athletics. Three days later, I get a call from an unfamiliar 650 number, and when I answered, I heard a strong, older voice saying, "This is John Arrillaga calling to thank you for a very classy letter!" HOLY COW, THE GODFATHER HIMSELF WAS CALLING ME!!! So we chatted briefly--I called him "Mr. Arrillaga" because appending the "Mr." was the only way I could think of to convey how much respect I had for him. I told him how much all of us Stanford people appreciated what he's done for the University, and I told him that we all think it even if we don't always get to express it to him directly. He told me, "Always remember your alma mater!" And I told him that I do and that I donate every year--just not quite in the quantities that he does. And he responded, "Well, that will change because someday you are going to be very, very rich!" I told him that I sure hoped he was right, and we said our good-byes.

Honestly, it was such a thrill that somebody like John Arrillaga would pick up the phone and give me a call. I still get excited thinking about it. John's prediction about me hasn't happened just yet, but I'm sure it will--John just didn't put a time frame on it...

John Arrillaga reminds me of the guy in the movie Contact who's floating up in space and tells Jodie Foster's character about the second launchship on Hokkaido Island, after the religious technician-nut blows himself and the first ship up.
