Shaw's compensation - terry - 07-16-2014

USA Today reports that David Shaw's total compensation in 2012 was "just over $2 million."

This information comes from Stanford's IRS Form 990, which is required to report the compensation of all officers, directors, key employees, and the five highest paid other employees. Shaw is in that last group.

Money well spent IMhsHO

Re: Shaw's compensation - Farm93 - 07-16-2014

Clearly all of the classic arguments about what an academic institution SHOULD be paying for sports coaches would apply.  However, even at $2 million, I believe that Coach Shaw is likely the lowest paid head coach with at least 3 BCS bowl game appearances.  Given the 2013 compensation for the middle tier in the SEC, I would guess Coach Shaw could easily get $4-5 million per year if he elected to go with the highest bidder.

Didn't we offer Harbaugh $5 mil/year to stay?

Rumor had it at $3 mil.

Re: Shaw's compensation - thunder_chik - 07-16-2014

Old Daily article (at http://www.stanforddaily.com/2011/01/10/reports-harbaugh-to-leave-stanford-for-nfl/) reported that our offer "came close" to the 49ers'; it probably just wasn't a 5-year deal like theirs.  I think there were alumni willing to step up and fork over to keep Harbaugh at least one more year, for Luck's sake.

Good Luck with that.  Harbaugh had a plan and a goal and Stanford was always a stepping stone.  I don't begrudge him at all.  He changed and set the tone and left us better than he found us, but his eye was always on the NFL and the Super Bowl.

Re: Shaw's compensation - thunder_chik - 07-16-2014

Let's hope Shaw's plan and goal is to stick around for at least nine years and surpass Pop Warner's record before moving on to the NFL.

Re: Shaw's compensation - Mick - 07-17-2014

I thought it worked perfectly.  Harbaugh turns around the program, but is clearly headed to the pros.  Some personal attributes that are possibly suboptimal for a long-term college coach.  Shaw learns from Harbaugh (and others) over the years and was very clearly ready to not just take on the program, but shepherd it for a very, very long time.  Perfect succession planning, really the kind you dream about.

My impression was that Luck was not exactly crying over Harbaugh's decision.

Re: Shaw's compensation - Stymie - 07-17-2014

I am depressed to be reminded that Mr. Shaw and Ms. VanDerveer are paid more by Stanford than Mr. Hennesey.  To paraphrase Babe Ruth's famous comment about the fact that his salary was higher in 1930  than Herbert Hoover's, Hennesey had a better year than either VanDerveer or Shaw......

Due to Hennessy's holdings in Google stock, I'm sure his 401(k) balance sheet looks just fine.

(I can't remember who, but someone somewhere pointed out that Hennessy's probably the wealthiest college president ever -- he sits on more than a few boards and was a co-founder of a firm that later went public.)

EDIT: of the Stanford administration, I've always felt Etchemendy was great, though that's mostly residual affection from his logic textbook/software.

Re: Shaw's compensation - FarmBoy - 07-17-2014

Um, yeah, I think Hennessey is part of a very small club of college presidents who are wealthier than the coaches of their football teams. I wonder how many presidents can say that? Maybe it's not as uncommon as I think, if there's a trend to hiring well-connected president's to drive fund raising.

A WSJ article from 2007: http://online.wsj.com/news/articles/SB117226912853917727

Quote:Mr. Hennessy's November haul included a $75,000 retainer from Cisco Systems Inc., CSCO -1.35%  on whose board he sits, plus $133,000 in restricted Cisco stock, proceeds of $452,000 from selling stock in Atheros Communications Inc., where he is co-founder and chairman, and a $384,000 profit from the exercise of Google Inc. GOOG +0.32%  stock options. He sits on Google's board.

Quote:In the past five years, through exclusive investments and relationships with companies, Mr. Hennessy has collected fees, stock and paper stock-option profits totaling $43 million, securities filings show. That dwarfs his $616,000 annual compensation at Stanford, where he has been president since 2000.

Didn't matter what we offered Harbaugh.  Unlike Shaw, he had no real Stanford ties, and it was clear after his first season that Stanford was merely a stepping stone to an NFL head coaching job.

Thanks for your trenchant comments, Mrs. CowboyIndian....

Anybody who knows anything about the real world knows that oor Prez. has significant outside income. Good for him, IMHO, but it is irrelevant to the point of my comment.  More importantly, are we sliding down a slippery slope to being a University which rewards bread and circuses more than thought and intelligence.  I hope not but I am not yet convinced that this is the case.

Re: Shaw's compensation - FarmBoy - 07-17-2014

Stymie - don't a lot of college coach salaries end up being paid by non-university sources? For example, at UCB, the fans like to remind us that Tedford's salary mostly came from outside doners and sponsors. Is that so different from Hennessy's wealth being funded mostly from outside sponsors who are in part paying for access to the university?

Re: Shaw's compensation - BobK - 07-17-2014

Both Shaw and Tara's salaries are endowned.    :)

[/quote]I'm comfortable with Stanford rewarding academics, athletics, and the arts.  I don't think those rewards show skewed priorities if they are in the normal range of the market for those services/products.  I would be concerned if funding for athletics or the arts drained funds from the core academic mission, but I don't see any evidence of that.  Your question is a fair question to ask but is not so important that it can't be subject to a little friendly teasing.  ;)

So is an "endowned" salary... - Redrum - 07-17-2014

One that's paid for by donors but is depressing as hell?
