WBB: Starting lineups - 81alum - 08-02-2014

Pure speculation at this point, but fun speculation.  We know that Tara likes to experiment with lineups throughout the Fall and often does not settle on a regular starting lineup until January or even later.  But provided all the women recover well from their various surgeries, what do you think will be our starting lineup against Connecticut in our second game?

5 McCall, depth Kaylee Johnson (frosh), Picknell
4 Johnson (Kailee), depth Kaylee Johnson (frosh), Taylor Greenfield?, Erica Payne?
3 Bonnie Samuelson, depth Taylor Greenfield, Taylor Rooks (frosh), Britanny McPhee (frosh)
2 Lili Thompson, depth Karlie Samuelson, Jasmine Camp, Alex Green
1 Amber Orrange, depth Lili Thompson, Bri Roberson, Jasmine Camp, Alex Green

In looking at this possible depth chart, it seems to me as if 1-2-3 positions are very solid.  Amber, Lili, and Bonnie are proven starters now, but Karlie can play 2 or 3 and frankly is a superb player too.  Bri has been coming on strong as a potential backup point guard and we expect that Taylor and Britanny will be excellent wings.  We are simply loaded at wing.

The major questions come with the 4 and 5 spots, and the more I look them over the more I think that incoming frosh Kaylee Johnson is likely to get a lot more minutes than a typical frosh would get.  McCall will no doubt get a lot of time at the 5, but she has been prone to fouling and will need someone to take minutes behind her at the 5.  Who else is tall enough and athletic enough to do that?  Perhaps Tess can give us more minutes than she has, but a lot will be riding on the new center from Wyoming.

The 4 position is even more up in the air.  I presume that sophomore Kailee Johnson will start there--hopefully the surgery will have gotten her back on the right foot after her diminished minutes at the end of last season.  But who would back her up?  Perhaps the frosh Kaylee Johnson will come in behind both Erica and Kailee when needed, making it a 3 for 2 rotation of sorts.  But I wonder--especially early in the year--if Tara will instead go with senior Erica Payne or shift Taylor Greenfield away from the overloaded wing position to play more under the basket.  Either of those two would make sense for the team, and both Erica and Taylor have shown some facility under the basket.

I have also wondered if we would try a three guard rotation--with Karlie playing the 3.  But that seems a little silly given how many strong wings we have.  Instead, how about a 2 guard 2 wing 1 forward rotation?  We have so many more wings than forwards just now.

Any way you slice it, though, it seems to me that we are going to be playing less under the basket than we have been in many years.  We had better be consistent with our jump shots and our treys.

What do the rest of you think?

Concur with your comments. Interesting thoughts too on Taylor Greenfield and Erica Payne. Seems like question is whether Taylor plays aggressively (under basket) consistently - she seems to sometimes be very focused and aggressive then hit some more challenging patches. I always enjoy seeing Erica's energy level and it would be nice to see her earn more playing time with the positive results.

I agree also.  Health health and more health.  I believe all 4 player operations were the clean up type.Â
