Temple 37
Vandy  7

Ouch!

Re: Is the Derek Mason honeymoon over? - JohnR34231 - 08-29-2014

It shouldn't be, but given the patience of your average football fan it probably is.

Re: Is the Derek Mason honeymoon over? - OutsiderFan - 08-29-2014

Wow, they turned it over SEVEN times and were -5 in turnover/takeaway ratio!  U-G-L-Y...

Karl Dorrell hasn't been an OC for 15 years. Some might argue it shows.  The Vandy Scout board suggests this loss to be one of the worst in program history.  Not gonna be easy to regroup against Ole Miss next week either.

Vanderbilt's nine win seasons over the last two years created an illusion of a good team. The Franklin lead team only beat four teams that finished with a winning record; one during the season and their bowl game each year.

I feel really bad for Mason, Kotulski, Dorrell (the player), and Dudchock, but on the bright side it means we probably will not lose a recruiting battle with Vandy for the next few years.

My suspicion when I saw Franklin shopping himself around aggressively was that he knew something bad was around the corner.

I was torn.  I want the One who was waltzing with my darlin’ to the Tennessee Waltz When an old friend I happened to see Introduced him to my loved one and while they were waltzing My friend stole my sweetheart from me to succeed at Dynamite, Dynamite When Dynamite Dynamite starts to fight.

But I hate the SEC more.

Now if only he can ekk out a couple of wins within conference.

I don't think those guys had any expectation that there was some kind of grace period in the SEC, especially when you replace a pretty damn good head coach

I don't know if auto-correct is running completely amok (and what the heck happened to that thread?), but that is completely incomprehensible to this middle aged fool.

There was a lot of love for James Franklin on the GT sites until a couple of posters debunked his mythology with the fact that recent Vanderbilt success was built on the back of weak opponents and Tennessee's troubles. It will be interesting to watch him at PSU.

Honestly I really don't care how ex Stanford assistants do one way or the other when they leave, and oddly enough I really don't pull for Vanderbilt in any way. Even more oddly enough, I wouldn't mind seeing Ole Miss do well.  Of of my son's closest friends goes there. Nice kid; I envy his time in The Grove.

Curious: How many Bootboarders felt confident that Mason would make an excellent head coach?

That's a question you'd have to ask on that other board. This here's The CARDboard.

While I don't particularly follow them, I will be annoyed if we lost a perfectly good coach if (a) our replacement coach is not up to snuff and (b) that coach fails in their next position. While we were in the midst of B.uddy and H.arris hell, I was really pissed that the ND fams were hatting on Ty so badly. It seemed a tragedy that Stanford would lose the coach who brought us back to the top of the Pac10 and have him not even succeed after moving on.

I will admit a soft spot in my heart for Greg Roman. His creative offenses brought me so many moments of pleasure that I feel indebted to him and hope he gets his shot at a head coaching position.

I think it's pretty much impossible to guess who will make a good head coach until you see them in that position. And it's also really hard to tell who will succeed at different levels. There are too many things that go into coaching and we get to see basically none of the important ones publicly.

I have had a softish like for Vandy for the past 50 years since one of my HS teachers strongly suggested that I apply for the Grantland Rice Sport Journalism Scholarhsip.  I declined to apply, and I am glad that I did.  Good school, but not Stanford.

I root for Vandy because the more ESS-EEE-SEE teams they beat during conference play, the crappier the ESS-EEE-SEE is revealed to be (it's sort of even better now that they've lose to Temple).  Of course, since they barely play half the conference, no one will believe the ESS-EEE-SEE isn't great even if Vandy beats them...

Recognizing lyrics and understanding oman's sense of humor are two different things.  :-X

Too early to say, but we should know after he has been there three years. This first game was a terrible first impression.

Re: Is the Derek Mason honeymoon over? - IdCard83 - 08-29-2014

Unfortunately this does not bode well for Coach Mason.  It's not like they played well and still got beat or got beat by a fluke play.  They got demolished by a team that almost gave up football a few years ago.  There are probably some alums who feel they were on the cusp of something great and now this new guy comes along and will take them backwards. Something akin to B. teevens.  I'll wager that if they don't have a good year he'll be on the hot seat next year.  Then they'll just call it a failed experiment, trying to get a very good defensive coordinator from the Pac-12 no less, to be an SEC coach.

Re: Is the Derek Mason honeymoon over? - washingtonismoney - 08-29-2014

Mason may regret these pre-season comments:

Quote:“To be honest, I think we’re equally as talented if not more, defensively,” Mason said. “We’re big up front. Our backers are fast. They’re extremely fast. And secondary wise, it’s probably very similar. (Stanford) has a talented secondary back there. They are more proven because they’ve played more ball.

...
Vanderbilt’s mentality is ‘win-now’ and Mason believes this year’s team will be competitive in the Eastern Division with a blue-collar, defense-first mentality.

Definitely in trouble...that's Temple.

Re: Is the Derek Mason honeymoon over? - JohnR34231 - 08-29-2014

Obviously, it was not an impressive debut, but to jump to conclusions on how Mason will do at Vandy based on one game is a little silly, IMO.
