The Spring Game - OutsiderFan - 08-29-2014

Having found the 2014 Spring Game on Youtube, I watched it the last two nights.  A few observations:

Based on the Spring Game I saw, Barry Sanders would be the starting RB based on his production and pass cathcing ability.  Young made fewer big plays and was absolutely "turnstiled" on a LB blitz by Noor D. IIRC.

Ricky Seale will not play any meaningful snaps in 2014 unless three RBs go down in front of him.

I get how they want to protect the QB, but you really can't make an accurate assessment on a QB unless he can be hit.

Peter Kalambayi was used as a pass rusher, but I never really noticed him in pass coverage.  If he can effectively drop into coverage he may get a lot more playing time against passing-oriented teams.

Noor D. really looked good.  He stood out more than Blake Martinez.

Hogan seems very capable of utilizing the height of his receivers.

Henry Anderson is a monster.

Ryan Burns has a long way to go.

I'm not saying Seale is an All-American, but he gained over 6,000 yards in high school, setting a record for the San Diego area.

He's also in this cool photo:

So let's see what happens this season before writing him off as some kind of uncoordinated reject, ok?

Re: The Spring Game - yvonne - 08-29-2014

I have to admit when that play happened, I was in the concourse talking to Seale's dad. When he heard his son was in the game, he, in true dad fashion said, "We're going to win!"

Nobody is calling anybody an uncoordinated reject.  I'm giving an honest assessment of what I saw in the Spring game available for viewing on YouTube.  It's hard for me to imagine, with Young starting, Sanders, Wright, and McCaffrey, that Seale will get many carries.

There are many guys who do great things at one level and can't at the next level up.  It's nothing personal.

Nothing personal, just ridiculous to write somebody off (especially at a skill position) based on just one game.

Seale had 11 carries last year, more than Sanders and just three less than Young and nine less than Wright. That tells me the coaching staff last year didn't see a tremendous gulf between his talent/potential and that of the other guys.

Re: The Spring Game - OutsiderFan - 08-29-2014

First of all, I prefaced my comments by saying "based on what I saw from the Spring Game."  Second, how is it ridiculous to draw conclusions from watching someone play?  Sure, someone might improve, but so too might everyone else already ahead, and behind.

Here's a cold hard truth.  If a guy isn't playing significantly in his RS Soph year, he more than likely isn't a great player, or even a difference maker.  Yes, there are exceptions, but by and large, especially at RB, if a guy hasn't had significant playing time by then, he isn't ever going to get it barring injury.  And that more than likely means no NFL career, which is what most of the players are aiming at.  That's why this is such a brobdingnagian year for Barry Sanders.

Of course you didn't see Wright or McCaffrey do a whole lot in the spring game either.

[But I had thought Sanders was a favorite over Young to be the first day starter, based in part upon the spring game. Terry countered with an argument for Young - and he has obviously been proven correct. ]

Would've been pretty astonishing to see McCaffrey in a game that happened before he got to campus.

Given Mike Bloomgren's comments, maybe he was there and we didn't know it:

Quote:"The big thing about Christian is he is not a freshman. I will not believe that from this day forward when people tell me he is a freshman. The way he has learned, the way he's performed, and just what he's done against what I think is an elite defense (have impressed)."

Yeah, but he would've been great!  So would Gaffney have been, and don't even think about Gerhardt!

Yes, and 49 year old Brad Muster and 55 year old Darin Nelson could still have shown some moves, although the fact that their bones are as strong as kindling might hamper them a bit.

That was indeed the point, coupled to the other comment by Outsider fan,
