Impressions from an early Pac-12 game -
Trevmiesterj - 08-29-2014
I am currently watching the Colorado vs Colorado State game and it's a darn shame the Cardinal will not have a chance to pile up ground and pound on the Buffalos this year. The Rams are rolling through the Buff defense like soft water through a Teflon sieve.
Watching this game makes me think that CU should invest in some D-Con bait pellets to keep the Pac-12 South basement vermin free because they are going to likely live in it.
I wonder who will get that dubious honor in the North?

Gosh, I thought I was being a bit coy.Â
A harsh critique perhaps, but watching this game really makes me wonder when (and if) Colorado will ever develop their program again. 1990 seems like a very distant memory.

Wazzu cougin' it against Rutgers and Colorado getting steamrolled by Colorado State isn't going to help the Pac-12's argument when it comes playoff selection time.Â

Vanderbilt just got beat by Temple, do you think anyone thinks that matters for how the SEC is perceived? O/U on Kentucky's wins this year? The basement-dwellers of a conference don't matter unless it's most of the conference (cough Big 12 cough).

Or if they manage to beat some of the non-basement dwellers during the regular season.

The top of the P12 is very strong. The middle is above average and the bottom is terrible. I don't think the conference will be evaluated on the basis of how the bottom fares, I suspect that opinions will be based on how the middle does (it is a given the top teams will do well)....
The top teams need UDub, Oregon State and the Arizona's to hold their own to protect the conference's national image.

My suspicion is that, at least in the popular shorthand, six games will end up mattering: MSU-Oregon; UCLA-Virginia and UCLA-Texas; and the three games versus ND. They're the highest profile games and therefore will get outsized mind spaceÂ
(Things are different if you believe the committee will take good stats seriously but LOL no way. The basketball committee still uses RPI.)

Is it just me or has Kaimi Fairbairn been missing FGs for UCLA since I was a student?

UCLA looking Tedfordian right now

I am thoroughly unimpressed by UCLA. Hundley is getting pressured all over the place. False starts everywhere. Forget about the Voldemort, that's a pipe dream with this o-line. Their o-line was crap last year, and they lost the best player on the line in Su'a Filo, yet somehow people are picking them to win it all?

Keeping the Pac-12 North basement vermin free will be impossible. Oski will be living there once again this year.

UCLA is in trouble. The offense can't generate anything (12 yards rushing in the first half) and now the defense is starting to buckle-unless the Bruun D and special teams can keep mustering up scores Virginia is going to take this game home.

Hundley might have blown his shot at the Voldemort. That award is all about hype. It will be hard for him to get back into the conversation. His O line doesn't appear strong enough to lead him to a Voldemort season.

OMG we wrote Mason off after one game, and now we are writing Hundley off after one half.
It's the end of the third quarter. Hundley is now 16-27 for 207 yards and also a rushing TD. Not Voldemort numbers, maybe, but respectable. UCLA is up 28-17.

If UCLA wins by 10+, I'm not downgrading them in any way after today. Traveling east is very, very difficult, and Va. may (or may not) be a bowl-quality team.

I've never seen the media "experts" over hype a team more than UCLA. And that was my opinion before they kicked off today.

To me, its not so much about the score. UCLA was hyped for Hundley, its O line, and its secondary. I was not impressed with any of those 3 today. The 3 defensive scores were anomalies in a poor defensive showing. Hundley's stats were okay, but one TD is not impressive.

I don't know. They're up big on Northwestern on the road right now.

Hard to believe: The projected PAC12 North cellar dweller is up 24-7 at the half.
