Good for him for turning something out of that tough game. As much as I enjoyed Stanford abusing him, I didn't think about what that can do to somebody's confidence. Stanford was a rather unfair test for a redshirt freshman.

He retired earlier this year.

Quote:Fans directed much of the blame at Hobbi, the understudy, and the expletive-laced reviews posted to his Facebook page and on Twitter were merciless. Some said he was horrible. Others told him to go back to Arizona. To quit life.

God, I hope the Stanford fanbase is nice/smart enough to not do something like that.

Stanford Counter Example?  Jordan Williamson.

Quote:"While our family has learned many powerful life lessons over the last few days, one key message that has come clear like no other is 'WE ARE IN A SPECIAL PLACE.' Never in my life have I seen the kindness, maturity, and love that has been displayed by this Stanford family and in particular your AMAZING boys." -  Linda Burton, Jordan's mother in an open letter to Stanford team parents following the Fiesta Bowl

LC - that's mostly what I saw reported in the press (broad support for JW), but I also heard that there were some definite public bashing on other sites or even his social media sites. I didn't see it for myself, but can't corroborate.

Re: 2012 Stanford DL - Unabashedly Scamming Charlatans oL in the trenches inspires Trojan-penned pla - stupac2 - 09-04-2014

I saw/heard enough badmouthing that I sent him a message on Facebook (or something) saying not to listen to the noise and that most fans were looking forward to seeing him in 2012. I don't have any specifics on what was being said, but that's not something I'd normally do so some of it must have been pretty severe.

No idea how it compares to what Hobbi went through, I'd expect Hobbi's was significantly worse just because USC's fanbase is so much larger, even if both have equal asshole quotients (which I also doubt, but can't really prove).

Re: 2012 Stanford DL - Unabashedly Scamming Charlatans oL in the trenches inspires Trojan-penned pla - Leftcoast - 09-04-2014

I saw some bashing but mostly support mixed with concern for how such a high profile miss would impact his next season.

This is backed up by the chapter in "Rags to Roses" and most anecdotal evidence published supports this.  The quote I attached was from his MOTHER after all.  On the Cardboard folks followed the same pattern -  approval of DeCastro's vocal support, concern for the player and worries about the impact on his upcoming season.

There are jerks in every fanbase but the ratio is lower here - The Hobbi vs Williamson cases show this.

IIRC, there was more criticism of Shaw for relying on a freshman kicker who had already shown nerves than there was criticism of Williamson for missing.

Y'know, I remember an awful lot of Trent and Chase coming from the outside and causing a lot of problems for USC as well.  I also remember Barkley getting gun shy and off-target after the Parry-Murphy Sandwich hit.  And Hobbi's a redshirt freshman, making his first start (?), going against one of the best tackle-for-loss teams in the nation.  Not exactly putting him in a position to succeed.

The whole "blame Hobbi" thing doesn't hold water for me.

You guys evidently weren't on the Bootleg, which mixed in a healthy dose of trashing of Williamson with tons of coach-blame.  I think when his mother wrote an open letter about the ordeal, some people in the other site jumped all over that.  It was not the best moment for the Stanford fan base.

Jordan Williamson's mom, Laura Burton's letter didn't really address the fan behavior, only that of the team. I think many fans took their cue from what they read about the team's reaction following the game. One of the offensive linemen wouldn't let a reporter near Jordan. We had a former football player on here arguing for extremely tough love, and part of that's his persona, but I don't think even he would condone some of the crazy stuff like death threats that happen elsewhere.

I think Jordan, who kicked the winning field goal to end the Oregon problem, and who is now Stanford's all time scoring leader, is doing OK.

Here's a Facebook page fans made following the Fiesta Bowl: https://www.facebook.com/pages/We-still-love-you-Jordan-Williamson/274067952654027

I believe you are quire correct here.
Here is a cut up of the S:C offense vs Stanford defense in that game.

The S:C lineman who was probably most abused was their LT #70 Aundrey Walker. Walker lost his tackle job later that season, and is currently third on their depth chart at RG (though maybe second if Mama is out).

However, that was the conventional wisdom at the time, and Hobbi received almost all of the of the wrath of s:C fans and gloating from Stanford fans. Goes to show that many folks don't seem to actually watch the games.

Here's a link to the Cardboard post-Fiesta Bowl thread on Jordan Williamson.  I see quite a lot of support with Cardboarders cajoling the one irate poster off a ledge.

And another commenting on the aforementioned letter.

I believe the nasty stuff on the Bootleg was mostly from Thunderdome which consists of like 5 guys who are extremely extremely old school. Thunderdome doesn't represent the majority of Stanford fans, or even The Bootleg. That's why they were given their own forum sandbox to play in, away from everybody else.

You guys who were fighting Stanford wars during the fax, and then BB days have it all over us youngsters.  Kinda like WW1 veterans, who London honored recently in fairly graphic and remarkable fashion.  This is a reach, I know, but the image is worth it.

You say that because you're a journalist, who would have wanted an answer. The offensive lineman saw it as defending a teammate and "little brother."

I, for one, did not see that as positive. Williamson would have been more than happy to answer questions if he had made the kick. He's got to face the fact that playing in big-time college football means he's got to do the reverse, too. I believe, after a moment or two to pull himself together, he would have done so -- he certainly has faced the questions about that kick straight-on many times in the years since. But the offensive lineman prevented him from doing so that night. That was a disservice.

Yes, I believe those athletes must answer reporter questions, especially since they get paid.
