Shaw is a pathetic play caller. - berto41 - 09-06-2014

1. Every time we had third and short USC knew what we were going to do. Completely predictable. I'm fed up with Shaw's lack of imagination.

2. In my book, a lot of what went wrong is on the coaches. To have 12 men on the field called after coming out of a time out? Pathetic.

3. The D played great as far as I'm concerned. The O looked amateurish. It's pretty clear we haven't repeated the key plays enough in practice.

4. Get Williamson out of there. He has terrible mechanics and now his confidence is SHATTERED. Turn the job over to Ukropina.

5. As far as I'm concerned, Shaw has cost us the Fiesta Bowl AND the Rose Bowl with his crappy playcalling. Either he's got to get his act together or be fired.

Does he get any credit for getting his team in those games?

Interesting that we got to at least the USC 32 on every drive.

And then what happened? I rest my case.

Yes, he deserves credit for getting his team to those games. And he more than loses that credit by the ludicrous playcalling in BOTH of those games. Rely on freshman Williamson instead of senior Luck -- Andrew Luck, arguably the greatest QB in the last quarter century -- in the Fiesta and calling ground play after ground play with 2 minutes left in the Rose Bowl and a long way to go. Both LUDICROUS choices.

Re: Shaw is a pathetic play caller. - rudruff - 09-06-2014

The Fiesta Bowl loss was a direct lesson from losing Big Game by letting Luck pass when Gerhard was unstoppable.

I'd like to see better red zone efficiency too, but I have no interest in seeing another HC at Stanford for a very long time.

Before the game, Shaw was interviewed and he claimed that he wants his offense now to be "versatile."  He specifically said that he wants to be able to do the power running "that we've always done" but that the offense was going to be more balanced.

I loved what he said, and took it to mean that he understands that with his current group of personnel that we need more unpredictability.  I heartily endorse his statement.  For the most part he seemed to follow his own advice, and as a result we punted only twice all day and moved the ball down the field consistently.

The calls I question were the times he elected not to attempt a field goal--one of which would have been a chip shot, and 2-3 calls in the red zone that I felt were too conservative.  But overall the play calling was successful at moving the ball.

So I find the word "pathetic" is an exaggeration.  I would instead criticize the poor job preparing the offensive line and the fatal mistake in not even attempting field goals.  There is plenty to criticize apart from play calling.

I was with you until that phrase.  There's something weird going on with those field goals.  A miss from 26 yards?  Even his make was a crazy hook.  I don't know if it's the holder or the kicker, but major surgery is needed there.

Jordan almost ALWAYS misses to the left.  He needs to aim right.

I would not say his play calling is one of his huger strengths.

Re: Shaw is a pathetic play caller. - 81alum - 09-06-2014

Perhaps something was wrong with Williamson, but Ukropina is a serviceable kicker and could have come in if Williamson was hurt.  He will likely be our kicker next year, no?

1) Either Williamson or Ukropina could have made the field goal from the 3 yard line.  We gave up a near certain 3 points for the chance of converting a one yard play.  By this point in the game I think it was clear this would be a low scoring game.  A tough call, and Shaw was certainly not conservative by electing to go for the TD.  But before he ran the play I really thought we should have taken the points.

2) We passed up a FG attempt from the 32--this would have been a 49 yard attempt, and we punted.  This decision was more understandable given the earlier misses and a 4th and 13, but I still think it was the wrong one.  We only got 12 yards out of the punt, and then USC took the ball down the field and had nearly an identical situation.  Rather than punting from their 35, USC attempted (and made) a 53 yard attempt.  It is almost as if the two situations were organized so as to provide a contrast.

Like patriotism, criticizing playcalling is the last refuge of the scoundrel...and the ill-informed.

Re: Shaw is a pathetic play caller. - berto41 - 09-06-2014

CowboyIndian,

When you get down off your high horse you should take yourself over to the Bbotleg and read Lombardi's acct of the post game presser. It states that Shaw hinted that the play calling needs to improve and quotes Shaw as saying that "The problem with the Red Zone right now is me." Put that in your peace pipe and smoke it.

I don't know about that.  If it wasn't hugely critical, the HC wouldn't be doing it.  The QB could do it on his own.

I'm not saying Shaw's playcalling was good, bad or indifferent, I don't possess the expertise to make that determination, and I'm pretty darned sure the guy who started this thread doesn't have it either.  But I won't say that playcalling must be inviolate from criticism.

Re: Shaw is a pathetic play caller. - berto41 - 09-06-2014

Ferrari,

My position is not that he should be fired now, of course not. But if he has a mediocre year capped by getting beat by a team with less talent because of his predictable play calling, then I think it would be time to think about alternatives. You think Shaw is the only coach that would agree to coach here? I don't. I'd have loved to have had Peterson.

In 2011, Stanford was ranked 4th in the country in TD conversions in the red zone.
In 2012, Stanford dropped to 67th.
In 2013, Stanford dropped to 83rd.
So far in 2014, Stanford is ranked 121st.Â
