Takes 12 minutes for the final 17 seconds. Fun to relive

And it was fun to be there - in the C.al alumni section - in my red sweater in a sea of blue and gold. (By the end of the 17 seconds, they were VERY blue...)

At the beginning of that 17-second roller coaster, I looked to the darkened sky above Memorial Stadium, raised my fist to heaven and screamed, "God, you owe us one!"

That is awesome. Thanks for posting the video.
Even before the last 12 seconds, that was a terrific football game. C.al's Russell White had a really good game, running for 177 yards. Glyn Milburn was even better, with 196 rushing yards and 379 all-purpose yards, which was a Pac-10 record at the time and still is the Stanford record. Stanford's late fourth quarter drive, which led to the McCaffrey TD, covered 87 yards in 2 minutes, including a 4th and 6 conversion. What a great game.

Watched that from in the middle of the B
ear Backers on the west side 50 yard line. My father-in-law was amped when they intercepted the 2pt try (he even pointed at me which was really out of character), when the flag dropped for excessive celebration I basically said that cinched it for Stanford. My wife told me to STFU, but my mother- in-law knew it too. "I think you're right." I don't know how I knew, but I knew.
Onside kick. Check.
Roughing the passer. Check.
Uprights.
Kinda quiet in that section. Lots of crying. No swearing or anything. Guy to my left patted my back and said, "Well, I guess we're even. See you next time."

That is just so wonderful. I weep tears of joy everytime I rewatch that.
It is so much better than your ordinary miraculous come-from-behind last-second victory over your traditional rival. What makes this special is that we owe the victory in large part to C.al's own fans, whose premature celebration gave us the critical 15 yards on the onside kick. And after the C.al fans had shot their team in the foot, the C.al team went ahead and shot themselves in the other foot.
The contrasting images of a swarm of blue and gold fans celebrating on the field just a few seconds before a swarm of red and white fans got to celebrate is one of the sweetest contrasts I have ever seen.Â
It is the perfect Greek tragedy, in which hubristic C.al is savagely punished by a dramatic reversal (peripeteia) of the highest order.
Still doesn't make up for 1982. C.al deserved to lose in 1990. We did not deserve to lose in 1982.Â

God, I wish that it were so. Unfortunately, this game never gets included in any of those "Top 100 X-t-X of All Time". The Play (that didn't really happen (so I'm in denial. Go find your own reality)) is too perfectly encapsulated for media purposes and is ALWAYS #1. Unless they indulge a list that shows more than the deciding field goal, this epic win will have less prominence than our several stakes in the ursine heart.

Of the 100 or so games that I have seen in person, the 1990 Big Game is #1 on my list. It was a heart-stopping back-and-forth battle for 60 minutes with big plays on both sides even without the amazing finish and the Revenge of The Play angle. I was so bitter after watching horrible, painful losses in 1980, 1982 and 1986 (and experiencing the "hospitality" of the Cal fans), that I never wanted to set foot in Memorial Stadium again. My friend Mike talked me into going. I thank him every time I see him.
