Happy birthday Nancy!

For what it's worth, Nancy - Redrum - 10-01-2014

I would have done the Spider Man climb up Roble's ivy to knock on your window.  Happy Birthday!

And best wishes for many more to come ...

My recollection is that she was the second XX person onboard, but maybe that's because I met her at a very early meetup.

Regardless, many happy returns, Nan3cy!

I know it's been a while, since the first conversation I got into had to do with helping a son or daughter pick a college. And I've been having fun with it ever since (well, maybe not so much during the Bddy/Wlat years...).

Thanks for all the good wishes. Life is great - though I'm thinking that the next time we go to Hawaii I need to pick up one of those Red Dirt t-shirts from Kauai - the ones that say "Older than Dirt" on the back.  :P

Glad you asked. That's a reference to a 50s/60s comedian/songwriter named Tom Lehrer, who purportedly had a friend named Hen3ry (the 3 was silent). Hen3ry was the guy who said, as he was being taken to the Massachusetts State Home for the Bewildered, "Life is like a sewer. What you get out of it depends on what you put into it." My dad was a major TL fan and played his records for everyone he knew - and as a result I still know most of the songs many years later. He's very biting, very political, and very funny. You can still find a number of his songs performed (and one entire concert, from Copenhagen of all places) on Youtube. I recommend them highly.

There is actually a TL-Stanford connection of sorts. Don Kennedy, Stanford's president from 1980 to 1992, was at Harvard when Lehrer was in grad school there. Don once told me about purchasing TL's first album from his very own hands in Cambridge. When the LSJUMB made itself banda non grata in Oregon over the spotted owl thing, and some reporter asked Kennedy for his take on the band, he paraphrased a review of TL's music and said, "Their muse is not bound by such inhibitions as taste."

For those who'd like to know more about Lehrer, I thought this BuzzFeed piece from April was very good: http://www.buzzfeed.com/bensmith/tom-lehrer

Birthday blessings!  And thanks for sharing about Tom L...we have a couple of his (vinyl!) records and also saw the stage play based on his body of work; I believe it was called "Tomfoolery".  Great stuff!

Re: Happy birthday, Nan3cy! - Bruce Wang - 10-02-2014

Thanks for filling us in.  So glad I asked.  At first, I thought I had not heard of Tom Lehrer.  After reading about him on Wikipedia, I realized I had in the account below.  That account had described him as a Harvard academic and not as a professional comedian.

Quote:From Wikipedia:

Lehrer's song "The Old Dope Peddler" is sampled in rapper 2 Chainz's song "Dope Peddler", on his 2012 debut album, Based on a T.R.U. Story. The following year, Lehrer said he was "very proud" to have his song sampled "literally sixty years after I recorded it." Lehrer went on to describe his official response to the request to use his song: "As sole copyright owner of 'The Old Dope Peddler', I grant you [motherf'rs] permission to do this. Please give my regards to Mr. Chainz, or may I call him 2?"
