Ryan Hewitt out of nowhere -

Hewitt has a nice little paragraph or two on Grantland today. He's playing a position that doesn't get much notice, but he's making a mark on the Bengals.

Also, linked in the article was this link to a highlight... of Hewitt's blocking.

It's not often that a play stands out because the blocker completely manhandles the defensive lineman, but after retreating a couple steps, engaging Kroy Biermann, Hewitt pushes the guy back a good five yards and then throws him another two for good measure.

I would not be surprised to see Hewitt stick as a fullback in the NFL. He didn't get much glory at Stanford because he mostly worked as a lead blocker during his last two years (when Stanford focused so heavily on power running). However, he showed some good rushing and receiving skills in his redshirt sophomore season. He picked up a first down or TD on an unreal percentage of his chances.

Can anybody explain why we didn't turn him into TE last year? Yes, he's a better FB, but the overall improvement at the TE position seems like it would have offset the drop off to the next best FBs, who are pretty good FBs.

This is something everyone was wondering and I don't remember ever getting a good answer. Maybe he can't run good TE routes?

Or maybe we needed him too badly as a blocker, but H-back would have been a fine fit. Guess everyone picked up on Spider 2 Y Banana. Gee thanks, Jon Gruden.
