Andrew Luck Watch - BostonCard - 10-10-2014

The Colts played (and won) again last night, on a game that I partially watched off the reflection of a window while I was eating French/California/Japaese fusion i privé (http://www.iprivesake.com/).  Andrew Luck had a phenomenal first quarter (something like 208 yards passing, in the quarter), as the Colts raced to a 24-0 lead.  Things got a bit sloppy after that, but Luck still ended with a pretty good line:

25/44 for 370 yards (8.4 yards per attempt), 3 TD, 1 INT and a QB rating of 91.4.

He's now had four consecutive 300-yard passing performances (all wins).
Fleener had two catches for 11 yards, but one was a TD.

I listened to Boomer Esiason all but embarress himself on the Jim Rome Show today with his effusive praise for Luck.  Stopped just short of calling him The Second Coming.  Our football 1/1s have certainly done us proud.

Re: Andrew Luck Watch - FarmBoy - 10-10-2014

A sad artifact of his success is that every article becomes an article to re-fight the battle of Luck vs. Wilson. Why can't fans just appreciate that two players from the 2012 class are having great success?

The Colts were pretty fortunate to come away from that game with a win. Luck was throwing under great duress the last three quarters and made some questionable decisions. Not having a ground game makes his life pretty hard.

Pat Macafee is also a great showman. That onside kick and recovery was awesome. And his ability to land a punt on a dime is unmatched, from what I can see. He's probably worth 3 points a game on his own.

I watched most of the game and walked away amazed at Watt. I don't watch much NFL outside of the Colts and Niners, and he's just a revelation.

Re: Andrew Luck Watch - BostonCard - 10-10-2014

I always thought that the "fight" such as it was, was between Luck and RGIII, the first and second draft picks that year, and the runner-up and Voldemort winner.  We are not re-fighting the Luck versus Wilson debate, because it was never really fought the first time.  And because of that, the Luck vs. Wilson debate becomes more of an academic discussion, along the lines of "who was the top QB from the 1983 draft".

Wilson has a Superbowl ring, so I am sure he is secure in how things turned out.  Luck has a chance to be the top quarterback in the NFL.

I don't watch a lot of NFL either but was floored by Watts performance.  Luck called him a freak earlier in the week and I agree with him.  Dominant.

On 2012, Wilson/Seahawks fans would chime into the Luck vs. RGIII debate with time "hey, what about our guy?" comments. In 2013, with RGIII injured or not performing well, the Wilson camp stepped up its claim for best of 2012 draft. This year, RGIII is an afterthought.

Having the SB ring is the ultimate trump card in these debates, even if it doesn't really mean you're great. Trent Dilfer has a SB ring, after all.

Watching the Colts is a bitter sweet experience. It's tough to see great QB play given our current situation. And seeing Fleener's seemingly continual decline is tough to watch as well.

Re: Andrew Luck Watch - washingtonismoney - 10-10-2014

If everything else were equal, I'd rather have Luck than Wilson. But Wilson's minuscule salary makes him -- by far -- the more valuable asset.

Re: Andrew Luck Watch - PrinceLightfoot - 10-10-2014

Wilson would not have lead the Colts to the playoffs the last two years.

Luck would have won the Super Bowl two years in a row with the Seahawk defense, a better OL, and Lynch in the backfield.

That is the completely subjective but not altogether untrue difference between those two QBs.

Re: Andrew Luck Watch - needle - 10-10-2014

They showed a graphic projecting Luck's season totals. He's on pace to pass for over 5,000 yards.

This is the last year of that, right? I mean, this is year 3 out of 4, but teams usually renegotiate then with stars they want to keep. It'll be interesting to see how that unfolds.

According to Boomer Luck will become the highest paid player in the history of the NFL and "deserves every penny!"  And when it inevitably ends, I guess he will get a smart phone and build stadiums.

I would not be even a little surprised if Luck pulls a Brady and takes less money so the team can spend more on other pieces.

Nor me.  I suspect He wants to play his entirecareer in one place, win some super bowls, and retire with brain and body intact.  I doubt he cares whether he is the highest paid player or not.  I think he dos care about winning, and the quickest route to that is improving his cast of characters.

Has our worship for Luck gone too far?

It remains to be seen whether he takes a max contract or not. I'm sure he wants to secure his families future and he was more than happy to sign a rookie contract that was bigger than the one Cam took the prior year. I quietly hope he'll also be a "team player" and make sure there's cap space for the teammates needed to win a SB, but won't be surprised if he decides to cash in.

Re: Andrew Luck Watch - washingtonismoney - 10-10-2014

It really depends on what Luck's values are, but I wouldn't recommend either taking a bunch less money or even becoming super-attached to Indianapolis were I advising him. Brady took less money, but it's been a constant complaint among Pats fans that the team hasn't spent the saved money -- throwing to Danny Amendola and Julian Edelman instead of Wes Welker can't be too fun for Brady (and there were leaked stories that the team was considering moving on from Brady last week).

The Colts can say what they'd like, but ultimately they'll do whatever is in their best business interests. They'd cut Luck in a second if they thought that was the right thing to do. I think it'd be foolish for Luck to unilaterally disarm.

(To say nothing of the basic competence of Indianapolis in general. Pagano seems like a solid coach. Pep Hamilton is aggressively average in his best moments. The front office sucks and the team is throwing good money after bad with the Trent Richardson situation. Could you imagine how much damage Luck would've caused playing for the 49ers or Seahawks? I suppose it could be worse; he could be stuck playing for Dan Snyder.)
