stats -
2 for 2028 - 10-10-2014
So, a lot was made out of Connor Halliday's week last week. By my math, we held their offense to >500 fewer yards than last week. Any stat gurus out there to see if that is meaningful? It has to be a big difference.Â

Cal's defense is terrible and they compound it by playing at break neck speed on offense. They probably had 2x the posessions against Cal than against Stanford.
That said, it was a tremendous exhibition of defense by Stanford tonight.

Halliday went 44/71 for 303 yards (4.3 yards per attempt) 2 TD's, 1 INT.
Last week:
Halliday went 49/70 for 734 yards (10.5 yards per attempt), 6 TD's, 0 INT's.
So, although WSU had 13 possessions against us (versus 15 against Cal) Halliday actually one more pass attempt against us than he did against Cal (maybe because WSU had TD drives of 1 and 2 plays).Â
He averaged 61.5 attempts per game against all teams before WSU played us. He averaged 508.7 yards per game, so we held him 200 yards BELOW his average, even though he attempted almost 10 more passes against us. Most importantly, we held him to 4 yards per attempt lower than his average.
Anyway you cut it, it was one impressive defensive performance (except, for whatever reason, WSU converted 4/4 fourth downs).

The difference was the tackling in the defensive backfield. I was a clinic and Hoffpauir in particular was a machine. I can only remember one WSU drive where they actually broke tackles.
It won't show up in the stat sheet but AJ Tarpley arguably had his best game of the season. His man/area was rarely targeted and he was flying all over the field, including a party in the backfield that really helped seal the victory. Maybe it was the Darth Vader unis - he was channeling some serious Sith last night.
