WBB Open Practice - Jskass - 10-19-2014

Wondering if anyone can share insights gleaned from Friday's open practice? Unfortunately I couldn't attend but would appreciate any info...do they really look like #20? I assume they are motivated to prove others wrong.

No scrimmage only drills.  Lots of info on that other site given no one played a game

Re: WBB Open Practice - chimera - 10-20-2014

Yes, I went and it was not very useful as far as evaluating the freshmen or checking for improvements in returners.  Nice to get a look at the team but that's about.  My initial impression of the freshmen is that Johnson could end up very good in that she is very long, moves and jumps well, and looked very active inside.  How ready is she to play?  No idea, probably has a lot of learning to do.  McPhee sat out with what was described as a minor foot problem so no clue there.  Also not much to note about Rooks, just because it was all drills and plenty of dummy ones at that.  Her shot looked fine, she looks the part, that's all I can say.  Guards shot a lot and we have a lot who can hit threes.  Greenfield looked good and aggressive playing the three.  Picknell looked improved, seemed confident out there and made a few nice moves, but again, no scrimmage so very little time to observe how the posts play with the ball.  Same with Kailee Johnson.  All in all, still in wait and see mode.  Nobody stood out like Chiney did and nobody struggled.  How good will the team be?  I have no clue.

thanks everyone. Maybe they didn't want to show much, since of course other coaches were there! Interesting you didn't mention McCall, who I thought looked very strong over the summer at the ProAm league. Roberson also looked improved and energetic. This will be an interesting year, and we'll see who really wants it!

Any predictions on the starting 5?

We can pretty much pencil in Orrange, Thompson and McCall, but the 3 and 4 are not as straightfoward.

Bonnie 3 and Oregon Johnson 4.

I think the 4 is very very straight forward and Oregon or older Johnson will be very very good.  The 3 has a lot of traffic.

In the open practice it looked like the other two "starters" were 4 Kailee Johnson and 3 Taylor Greenfield. But Bonnie was sitting out, and of course starters in drills aren't necessarily the real starters.

McCall and Roberson looked good in the open practice, but no one really stood out. Certainly not like Chiney used to. McCall seemed best at finishing around the rim among the posts. Kaylee Johnson had some problems there getting her shot to go down, but seemed to be trying the right things.

Re: WBB Open Practice - 81alum - 10-20-2014

A bigger question than the starting lineup, to me,  is who will be the first post off the bench.  McCall and Kailee J. are the logical 5-4s--but even if they are good they are not that experienced.  Can they stand up to a pounding?  They will pick up fouls and we will need someone else playing quite a bit of time.  Will it be frosh Kaylee, or Tess?  Maybe Erica Payne or they could move Taylor Greenfield from 3 to 4?  If her defense were much better she does have the moves under the basket to play the 4--but defense is a question.

3 there are lots of good options.  We have almost too many wings now, with Bonnie and Taylor and Rooks and McPhee.  I would not be surprised if Bonnie and Taylor get the bulk of the time since they both graduate.  It may be harder for Rooks and McPhee to play that much unless they knock Bonnie off her starting perch, or play out of position somehow.  Taylor Greenfield is a question mark--will she get back to her earlier solid play, or will she seem muddled as she was most of last year?

For guards we also have a lot of good options--particularly with Bri showing how well she could do over the summer, and Jasmine and Alex will be pushing for time knowing that this is Amber's last year and they each will have one more to go.  Karlie was terrific when she was healthy last year and we should not forget that she was defensively very solid--she is not just offense.  She is also 5" taller than Lili.  Karlie can play the 3.

When you look at how many great guards and wings we have, and how inexperienced and few posts we have, I wonder if we might see a 1-post system part of the time this year.  Tara will probably find a way to put her best five players on the court regardless of their position.  I kind of like a 2 wing lineup given our personnel.Â
