#5 in the Coaches Poll -

Jumping Ohio State, as well as Boise State and LSU, and now just one spot behind Wisconsin. This was our lowest rated part of the equation last week, and we had the biggest jump of the teams who are competing with us for that #4 spot - Wisco gained 2 spots and Ohio State gained only 1 compared to our 3.
Looks like a good bet we\'ll be #4 in the BCS.

What is the weighting formula as you move up places? What I mean is, since you are getting so close to the top, could Wisconsin\'s gain of two spots be bigger than our gain of three spots because be the differential between 4 and 5 is greater than the difference between 5 and 8 due to an emphasis on being high?
I agree with you though, the fact that we leapfrogged Ohio State and were voted 5th is a very good sign. Â I hope that ND\'s win over USC doesn\'t hurt us too much.

Here\'s the formula. So it\'s the actual votes received over the total votes possible. My math is sketchy, but I don\'t think that\'s a system that weights rankings higher as you get closer to #1.

Based on the formula that dabigv pointed to, Wisconsin went from 0.821 last week to 0.869 this week. We went from 0.754 to 0.836. Looks like a net gain to me.

Doesn\'t affect BCS standings but we are #5 in the AP poll as well:

Also just to correct an earlier mistake on my part, Wisco only jumped 1 spot because LSU was actually behind them last week. Like I said, sketchy math.
But even someone who gets their medical knowledge exclusively from television shows should know that operating tables are in operating rooms, not emergency rooms. As for organs, just gotta make sure they all fit together at the end!

.....and 5th in the Harris, up 2 from 7th. Wisco up 1 spot to 4th.
#4 should be locked up now, though the rankings that count are next week\'s.
Herbstreit thought that Stanford even had an argument to jump TCU should Oregon OR Auburn lose, and that isn\'t actually out of the question. The computers will give a good clue, their game against 1-11 New Mexico will not help their SOS.
Gaining on Wisconsin -
pauloalto - 11-28-2010
in both human polls ...
USA TODAY
last week: behind Wisconsin by 99 points
this week: behind Wisconsin by 49 points
HARRIS
last week: behind Wisconsin by 86 points
this week: behind Wisconsin by 24 points
The only team behind us in the USA Today/Harris top ten with a championship game to play and a chance to pass us by impressing the voters is 10/9 Oklahoma.

Oklahoma\'s performance should not matter, but if anything Oklahoma doing well will be good for Stanford. Â Oklahoma is one of the schools that is wedged in between Wisconsin and Stanford in many of the computer rankings. Â So, if Oklahoma gets blasted then Wisconsin could close the computer gap a bit.
If Oregon or Auburn lose it would all be good for Stanford.
Auburn loss - Stanford in the Rose Bowl, if TCU claims its rightful place.
Oregon loss- Stanford to the Fiesta Bowl, likely where it will be anyway. Â Though Stanford would earn the co-conference title.
Auburn and Oregon losses - Oh, that would be amazing. Â TCU vs Wisconsin/Stanford/Auburn/Oregon. Â Any of the four could be TCU\'s partner. Â It would be drama. Doubt that will happen. Â It is looking like Fiesta or Rose.
So either way it would be a rematch of meaning to Stanford fans.
Stanford vs. Wisconsin in the 2011 Rose Bowl (2000 Rose Bowl) or
Stanford vs. Oklahoma in the 2011 Fiesta Bowl (2010 Sun Bowl)

Yep. And I can\'t see Oklahoma catching us from behind because they are playing a lower-rated team, Nebraska, and will be favored. So I would think they wouldn\'t get a big bump up in the polls if they win.

With those changes, i think the team is in!! wisconsin dropped in the only fresh computer poll i saw, the sagarin. Auburn could certainly lose to South Carolina. So, Stanford could still end up in the Rose, Fiesta, or Orange, I think. I hope we luck out and play a big east or acc team who we can destroy.

I really really wanted to play LSU, or any SEC team actually. Unfortunately not looking like the Sugar is really in play- that\'s why I was hoping for Ohio State to slip up last Saturday.
If the BCS apocalypse happens and Oregon and Auburn both lose, it would require quite a bit of voter agenda-ing to keep us out of the title game. As it is the computers favor us by a good bit over the Big 10 teams. Stanford also has a much better SOS than Oregon or Auburn, at least according to Sagarin.
