WFH: Stanford 2 Louisville 1 (OT) - Viking_Guy - 11-15-2014

UConn sort of fell down on the job, and the stream wasn't available (as far as I can find) until midway into the second half.

But Stanford did it again, with a golden goal by Alex McCawley in overtime sending them through to a quarterfinal against the Huskies in Storrs on Sunday at 11 AM PT.

Looked like an even match, perhaps slight advantage Stanford in shots.  Lauren Becker scored only 3 minutes into the match, on an assist by Kasey Quon.  The CardinalS evened the match up after a sequence of penalty corners about midway through the first half.

And that was it until overtime.  I've said before, Stanford's speed and stick skill really shine when the play opens up in the 8 v 8 overtime, vs. the more crowded conditions of 11v11 regulation play.  Every play ends up being a transition attack.  In this case, Shannon Herold found open space down the left side, played it through to Maddie Secco, who cut it inside and found a player I couldn't identify and McCawley both in the circle against one defender.  It was hard to follow with no announcer, but I think the unidentified player (might have been Becker) settled the ball, and the defender came out on her.  She slipped the ball to McCawley, and Louisville's keeper came out and sprawled as Alex hit the ball forward.  It came off the keeper to the right, and McCawley followed it outside of the goalie, wound up and pounded the ball into the center of the cage.

Yay!

This is officially Stanford Field Hockey's first ever NCAA tournament victory, is it not?

Excellent news!  And another good reason to be interested in all of Stanford's sports--so a football loss can be seen as just one disappointment amidst many other pieces of good news.  It helps to keep things in perspective on days like this.
