MSoc: C.al 2 Pac-12 CHAMPS Stanford 3 - Viking_Guy - 11-16-2014

At the half, 2-1 good guys.

A really entertaining first half, especially for Stanford fans.  There were streaks of pressure, but the Cardinal really dominated play for about the opening 20 minutes.  They scored their first in the 13th minute, as Corey Baird worked a nice interchange that led to a close-in shot blocked by the keeper.  The rebound however went across the face of goal, and Eric Verso ran on and punched it at goal.  A defender tried to keep it out, but could only get a deflection that slowed but couldn't stop the ball.

Stanford had two more good looks to get a second, but around the 21st minute C.al got a good period of sustained possession, with lots of pressure in Stanford's end.  They scored when Stefano Bonomo got free across the top of the penalty box, working from left to right then as he cleared a defender hammering the ball back to the left post.  Epstein didn't even move; couldn't tell if he was screened by the defender that Bonomo stepped around, but it wouldn't have mattered anyway.

Possession evened out a bit in the last 15 minutes, though Stanford still had the advantage, with Baird having a good look from about 8 yards blocked after an Edwards through ball clipped a C.al defender and settled perfectly for Corey.  But the Cardinal moved back ahead off a set piece, something that's become a bit of a specialty.  A foul out at the right top corner of the box that probably should've been a yellow card gave Stanford a free kick opportunity, and Ty Thompson floated a ball into the back post that Brian Nana-Sinkam made a brilliant jump on, getting high above his defender and the ball and hammering it down across goal into the right side netting.

All in all really entertaining.  One note: C.al really misses their injured keeper Taillole, who got banged up last week.  Their backup goalie, Alex Mangels, is okay, but he's spilling a lot of rebounds and has parried a couple of balls wide that were probably going out on their own.  And he's cleared back passes directly to Stanford midfielders on a couple of occasions.

Baird's confidence and swagger is up HIGH -- he's dribbling through just about all of the hapless 59ers. (though...he just picked up a yellow.)

Also, a lot of Stanford fans there -- might be a 50-50 split, at least at quick glance.

And the C.al keeper does it again - nice punch, but hits it directly to the top of the box to Ty Thompson, who hammers a first-time volley just high.

Big chance spurned by Verso.  Lovely ball from the right endline served into him wide open at the six, and he can't get over the top of the free header, sending it high.

They just subbed Langsdorf on to give Batteer a rest; I would've gone for Verso.  He's had some questionable plays this half; dispossessed at half, he stood there looking around while the play continued for a good five seconds and a C.al player blew right past him with the ball.

A deep throw-in, and a flicked in ball without much danger, but Hilliard-Arce completely whiffs on an attempted chest trap clearance, letting the ball get behind him right into the path of a C.al player who pounces and buries a quick shot far post.

Verso has to lay out for that ball.  Ball squirting across the face of goal in a tie game with under a minute left, you have to at least stretch for it.

Heading to overtime.  UCLA has won, beating SDSU 2-1.  So Stanford needs to win.

C.al has also been much more aggressive since scoring that craptacular second goal.  One mad scramble in Stanford's box after a nice touch through led to a close-in shot that Epstein parried, but left the ball in the box for a second.  Defense covered, but it was really close.

And yes, the fact that it's Verso rather than Jordan Morris has made a difference.  Jordan better at least make the fricking bench for the game against Ireland.

What a beautifully played game, and a thriller that came right down to the wire in double overtime.

NCAA tourney selection show is tomorrow, Monday Nov. 17 at 11 AM PT.

Stanford currently #2 in RPI, behind UCLA.  They should both draw a #1 seed.

It will also be an interesting test of the NCAA's selection strategy.  Most recent RPI is UCLA, Stanford, Charlotte, and Notre Dame.  UCLA won out today, Notre Dame lost in the semis of the ACC tourney, and Charlotte lost in their first game in the Conference USA to unranked Old Dominion.  In the coaches' poll, Syracuse was #1, but lost to Louisville in the ACC semis.  Notre Dame was 2, Stanford 3, Charlotte 4 and Creighton 5. The BlueJays also lost in the semis of their Big East Tourney to Providence.  Thinking Stanford may be close to a unanimous #1 in the coaches, maybe splitting some votes with UCLA.  And the bye would give Jordan more time to get back and readjust to West Coast time.

NCAA men's tourney is 48 teams, with the top 16 getting a first round bye, and higher seeds (as long as they can/want to) hosting until the Final Four.  And of course the College Cup is in North Carolina. ::) Between 1990 and this year, the College Cup has been in North Carolina NINE TIMES, and in ACC country, the South and Texas NINETEEN times in 25 chances.  It's been west of Texas TWICE - Carson in 2004 and UCSB in 2010.  Other than that, twice in Ohio, once in Missouri and once in Pennsylania.

Stanford, UCLA, Washington and potentially C.al could all be seeded.  Hopefully in divergent brackets; wouldn't want to see the Huskies or the Bares as a #4 seed in our region - but I think it's at least even odds that C.al will be #4 in Stanford's region as the NCAA decides to save money.  Huskies could also happen, given their loss to OSU today.  Also wondering if the Beavers can make the tourney; they finished tied with C.al in conference and with that good win over UW.  5 of 6 Pac-12 teams in the NCAA tournament?

It's hard for me to imagine too many conferences are better* than the Pac-12. I've been very impressed by OSU's Shelton whenever I've seen him (as well as the 59ers' Seth Casiple), and for those guys to pilot teams that are near the middle-to-bottom of the conference ... well, it speaks to some highly impressive depth. Which, of course, bodes well for Stanford's chances.

Also speaks well to Gunn's abilities that his old team, Charlotte, is still in fine fettle after his leaving the school.

One last thing: hoping the team takes advantage *now* of the chance. There's a worst-case scenario in terms of departures. Besides the seniors (Bateer and Meyer...who both strike me as more "valued contributors" than "absolutely essential), you have a number of guys with conceivable pro prospects:

Morris: already covered ad nauseam before. Could get a big-money offer if he wanted it.

Corey Baird: not ready to get big minutes in MLS yet. But, Salt Lake have his homegrown rights and they've started up a third-divison reserve teams. Presumably they want to stock up that team with high-level, young prospects; indeed, they've already signed a Stanford prospect: Justen Glad was supposed to be at Stanford next year but instead took cash to play for Salt Lake. Is it likely he'd leave? Dunno, but it seems at least plausible that he'd leave.

Brandon Vincent: he is a smart, reasonably athletic left back with some passing skill (albeit...inconsistent...crossing). Do you know how rare those are? Again, plausible he could get an MLS offer (which would subsidize his college education, should he choose to return to school at some point.)

So, better to seize your opportunities now rather than later; things can get scrambled.
