Men's soccer - BostonCard - 11-23-2014

Currently on the Pac-12 Net Bay Area.  Stanford and Irvine are tied 0-0 in lateish in the first half.  I can't get the stream to work.

BC--

Some good stuff.  But one absolutely horrid offsides call against Stanford pulled what should've been the first goal out of the net.  With the ball at about the penalty spot, an Anteater defender fell about one yard in front of his goalline.  Stanford hit a through ball to Batteer on the back post and he tucked it home, standing directly in line with the defender who had just gotten to his feet.  The assistant referee blew the call, because it looked like the lead official was going to give it.

Stanford dominated the early going, but Irvine got some good possession going midway through the first half, and things were much more even after that.

And I'm still unhappy that C.al got to play against a much weaker SIUE team; they advanced earlier 1-0, to face the winner of UCLA-University of San Diego, which kicks at 7 PT.

The offside call was horrible. Not even close.

Re: Men's soccer - Viking_Guy - 11-23-2014

Oh, and one other aside:  Maryland?  That #14 RPI team that somehow got seeded #4 overall ahead of Stanford?  Lost at home to Maryland-Baltimore County 1-0 earlier.

Re: Men's soccer - dabigv13 - 11-23-2014

Argh, another offside call preventing a goal. Looked like he was even when the ball was released. Give that to the offense refs...

Re: Men's soccer - washingtonismoney - 11-23-2014

Irvine is trying to frustrate Stanford but we're playing pretty well. Just stay patient.

Re: Men's soccer - washingtonismoney - 11-23-2014

Morris is such a bull, and his vision is probably his best asset.

Re: Men's soccer - dabigv13 - 11-23-2014

Man! International forwards put those away Morris!

Re: Men's soccer - washingtonismoney - 11-23-2014

Hopefully the team can get Thompson back soon -- has been so valuable in covering space, keeping a rhythm with his passing, and play timely defense.

Re: Men's soccer - washingtonismoney - 11-23-2014

Oof, that missed finish was bad.

(Still think Morris's vision is most special.)

Excuse my ignorance- are there unlimited subs in college soccer?

Unlimited subs, and you can sub players back in. A stupid deviation from international soccer rules, but they're there nonetheless.

Re: Men's soccer - dabigv13 - 11-23-2014

Kinda makes it feels like my Sunday night rec league.

Re: Men's soccer - dabigv13 - 11-23-2014

Bummer. We definitely controlled play there and had some good chances, but just a bit off. If we stay patient it should come...

Re: Men's soccer - Viking_Guy - 11-23-2014

Sub rules:

If you leave the pitch in the first half, you can't reenter until halftime.
If you leave in the second half, you're allowed to re-enter once.

I think the second half rules also apply to the entirety of overtime.

Re: Men's soccer - dabigv13 - 11-23-2014

Nice pass from Morris there. These refs are not giving offsides ties to the offensive player....

Re: Men's soccer - dabigv13 - 11-23-2014

aggggggghhh

Should've had this game won in regular time. Oh well, nature of the game.

Re: Men's soccer - Viking_Guy - 11-23-2014

The two seniors, Meyer and Vincent, didn't have good games.  Meyer has time, and hits the ball directly to UC-I's central midfielder, who lays it off to the forward, then runs onto the ball as no one tracks him, and is held onside by Vincent standing outside to tuck the ball in at the near post.  Nothing Epstein could do.

And yes, it should've been won in regulation, either with the disallowed goal or any of a number of chances for Morris.

Horrible way to end the season.  And again, these two teams should not have met in the second round.

Re: Men's soccer - BostonCard - 11-23-2014

Well, that just sucks.  I forgot that it was a golden goal rule in the NCAA.

Re: Men's soccer - washingtonismoney - 11-23-2014

Vincent's a junior, no?

Anyway, depending on attrition this team could be anywhere between dominant and solid next year.
