wBB: Stanford v. New Mexico Game Thread - TheFarm07 - 11-24-2014

The game is streaming off the Mountain West website:

Thompson is not starting?  I haven't seen her out on the floor.

She was named espnW's Player of the Week.

Re: wBB: Stanford v. New Mexico Game Thread - TheFarm07 - 11-24-2014

Ridiculous.  After starting the game 22-6, we allowed them to go on a 21-4 run.

Re: wBB: Stanford v. New Mexico Game Thread - TheFarm07 - 11-24-2014

Utter ridiculous #2.  After scoring 15 points in the first 5 minutes, we scored 20 in the next 15 and let them outscore us 29-13, only a last second Orrange 3 (she's getting good at that), has tied the game.

More concerning is the lack of Lili Thompson.  Is she injured?

Per Stanford Women's BB twitter, Thompson not feeling well.

Re: wBB: Stanford v. New Mexico Game Thread - Viking_Guy - 11-24-2014

Well, they seem to have decided they could drive again.  Stanford has scored 12 of the first 14 points after halftime to take a 47-37 lead.

Not so good: Stanford 5-10 FTs.

Now I'm wondering why Bonnie isn't playing either...

7-16 from FT, NM within 6...

Re: wBB: Stanford v. New Mexico Game Thread - TheFarm07 - 11-24-2014

On offense, we seem too lackadaisical, making careless mistakes and keeping them in the game

Re: wBB: Stanford v. New Mexico Game Thread - Viking_Guy - 11-24-2014

Tara's substitution pattern is also kinda weird - at one point she had Roberson, Green, Kaylee, McCall and Karlie on the floor.  Where's the offense in that lineup?

One reason we're shooting FTs so poorly is that we have a lot of people who haven't played a lot taking them.

At least Roberson is trying to drive against an opponent with foul issues.

Bonnie's in now. Maybe Tara is still limiting her minutes.

And of course, I just noticed.  It's Missy as the lead official...

Our offense is still disjointed; there's no flow to it.

Pathetic, we can't put them away and now they are within 2.

Is this the same team that beat UConn?

Re: wBB: Stanford v. New Mexico Game Thread - Viking_Guy - 11-24-2014

And UNM goes on a run to cut it to 64-62 with just over two minutes left.

If I see Taylor Greenfield fail to box out on a defensive rebound again, I think I may break my screen.  Every time the ball goes up, she drops her hands.

Re: wBB: Stanford v. New Mexico Game Thread - TheFarm07 - 11-24-2014

Do they know anything besides going for 3s?

Re: wBB: Stanford v. New Mexico Game Thread - Viking_Guy - 11-24-2014

Kailee Johnson hits two FTs to take a 66-65 lead (shooting 33% on the season).  UNM gets a silly foul by Taylor Greenfield, and misses two FTs.  Bonnie hits two.  UNM tries to get a three off, and is blocked by Amber, who then gathers the ball and is fouled.  She hits two, and the game ends.

70-65 final.

Phew...so many mistakes, yet we escaped with the win.

On the positive side, Kaylee Johnson with a remarkable 22 rebounds as we outbounded N.M. 50-31.

Scarier than it should have been. As for the video, that was the weirdest buffering I've ever experienced!

Re: wBB: Stanford v. New Mexico Game Thread - Viking_Guy - 11-24-2014

On the stat monitor, it's really weird.

Stanford hit 9 of their first 13 shots to take a 22-6 lead.  Then hits 3-17 before Amber's halftime three-pointer makes it 35-35.

They come out in the second half, and hit 8 of their first 9 to push the lead back out to 53-51 with 13 minutes left.  And finish hitting TWO OF THEIR LAST SEVENTEEN.

Stanford had four people make more than one field goal, and one of them made two.  Shooting 40%, 31% from three, and until the last run Stanford was 11-23 from the free throw line, finishing 17-29 to at least get in the same zip code as respectable.

The stat tracker has some neat tools to play around with:

Will have to play around with it some more.  There's a trends/runs tools palatte that looks intriguing.

Hoping Lili feels well by the weekend, and Bonnie keeps getting stronger.

Re: wBB: Stanford v. New Mexico Game Thread - Viking_Guy - 11-24-2014

There's a plus/minus category in the stats tool.

McCall +18.  Amber +11.  Karlie +0.  Greenfield and Johnson+4.  Roberson -9 and Bonnie -11.

It seems we got into trouble when we went into the bench.  And Bonnie's plus-minus is interesting because she only took one shot, missing a three.  But this seems to argue for more minutes for Bird.  She only played 14.  I'd like to see a lineup, if healthy, of
Taylor's three-point shooting is so hot and cold, she doesn't stretch the floor very far at the three.  She was good on the drive, bad from anywhere outside about 8 feet, and not very solid on defense and the d-boards tonight.  And she missed what could've been a devestating front end of a 1-and-1 that could've pushed Stanford out to a 12 point lead with 5 minutes left.  She had a nice driving layup before that, but if she's playing at the three, and the other team is in man-to-man, she should be CAMPED OUT in the post - she's got 3-4 inches on her defender almost all of the time.

And Bird at least tries to play an offensive inside game.

Well, chalk it up to what promises to be a long line of learning experiences this year.  I think we might be pretty good by February, if everyone stays healthy.  But we really need to get some more balanced scoring - tonight, Amber and Karlie had 41 of our 70 points.  And the bench only scored 9, with only one field goal.

Re: wBB: Stanford v. New Mexico Game Thread - chimera - 11-24-2014

Gotta do a better job of getting the bigs good shots.  We have been driving and getting calls, but can win them all that way.  NM is not good inside.  We need to get the young posts involved against a team like that, let them get a scoring rhythm.  they won't be effective with 2 - 4 shots a game each.  Pick and roll has to use the roll part, not just endless picks.  Greenfield needs to speed up on offense.  She slows things dow.  Defense was not good.  I don't understand why the coaches choose to leave supposedly poor shooters so open.  Makes sense when you need to double someone great.  Nobody on NM is that great.  No need to double their bigs.  No fancy scouting report defense needed.  Even mediocre shooters can look good if you leave them wide open.  Play defense!  Get on them!  And turn them over with our quick guards.  We did little of that.  Even without Lili this should have been much easier.  Letting two big leaves go was bad.  Maybe our easiest match-up is...UConn.  :o
