MWP National Semis: OT3: Stanford 11 U.SC 12 -
M T - 12-06-2014
A strong first quarter by Stanford. Bowen has all 3 goals (or maybe it was only 2). Stanford 3-1
More offense in the 2nd quarter, with a few 6 on 5s, including one that continued over from the first quarter (Stanford seems to usually lose the sprints). U.SC pulled even and the Bonanni got two, including a penalty shot. Then back and forth.
The sun was against us. Our goalie didn't even move on 3 of the shots, partly because the shots were so good, but probably partly the sun. Stanford 7-5
3rd quarter, Stanford was rather weak on offense. Not many shots. U.SC got the first 3 goals to pull ahead 8-7, but Bonanni got a good break out and made a good 1 on zero shot against the 6'9" goalie. But it is anybody's game. Neither team seems stronger. Tie 8-8
3:53 to go... Stanford up 9-8. Better play by Stanford so far. Neither team is doing well on 6 on 5s.
3:08 left. Stanford misses on a 6-5, gets the rebound but passes to the wrong team. Time out U.SC.
1:38 left. Up 1 goal and may limit U.SC to one more possession.Â
0:19 left. Stanford up 1, but U.SC has the ball. Lots of nerves...
U.SC got the ball to their main scorer and he made the quick shot from 4m off to the left of the goal.
Tie game 0:14 left. Stanford has the ball. Didn't get a shot off.
Overtime. Stanford has at least 2 players, incl. Bonanni with 2 majors (you're out if you get a third). U.SC has at least one player out with 3.
OT 1 (2x 3min OTs)
Bonanni fouls out & U.SC scores. 9-10
0:29 left. Stanford has a 6-5
0:23 Bowen scores. 10-10
U.SC doesn't get a shot off, as Stanford steals the ball with 0:05 left.
On to OT#2
The game has been pretty well ref'ed. The announcers are good. And the play is great. Let's hope it goes the right way!!
0:36 Stanford's Bowen scores on 5m free ball! Up 11-10
0:11 U.SC scores on a 6 on 5. 11-11
No shot by Stanford.
Now we're to sudden death 3 min periods.
Stanford has only won one sprint. So U.SC probably gets the first shot.
U.SC scores on a longish shot with under 30 seconds left.
Stanford's season is over. UCLA, also ranked #1 with Stanford, but 3rd at MPSF tourney, had an easy opponent as Stanford was seeded 2nd.

tough last 29 seconds of the 4th, did everything wrong with a 1 goal lead. Had to get that last shot on frame, and gotta block the USC shot right after the timeout. Gotta earn it in OT now.Â

Bowen scores with 23 seconds in OT to tie it. Double OT.
Bonanni out for remainer. That stinks.

Just can't close it... It's odd that both times USC has tied it late, our offense hasn't even attempted a shot to win the game. Seems like with our best player out now, we wouldn't want more OT.Â

Forgive my ignorance, is it now sudden death?

Yes... Sadly. Sudden death beginning with third OT.
To be honest, SC seemed like the better team beginning with about 2 minutes in regulation. Stanford, IMO, started to play tentatively on offense, perhaps to run out the clock. Never even tried to go to hole man, it seemed. In OT, they played better, but SC still seemed stronger. Our goalie made at least one great save. We also fouled at really critical times (yes, I am very aware that fouls are committed constantly below the surface) that changed the game.
Bummed.

Darn, another Fall national championship bid that has gotten away from us. With men's women's and women's soccer, Men's water Polo, and Women's volleyball (even men's cross country) it felt like we would easily get a championship, if not a couple. All of this is good for our directors cup standings which is always nice, and Women's volleyball has a great shot. It's just tough with two leads in this game, and only needing to defend 1 possessions, and both times we let it slip.Â

Agreed, it seemed like that whole second half we were just a bit outmatched. USC played a lot like our Women's water polo team last year it seems, with them in the second half having such a suffocating defense. Now I know how it is to be on the other end. USC really earned it and 3rd/4th is never a bad showing in any sport.Â

Hopefully, women's volleyball can get us a national title, but it will be tough. Hopefully we learned from the UW loss and work on our weaknesses.
Otherwise, we'll have to wait until the spring with women's water polo, women's tennis and men's volleyball as our best chances to keep the streak alive.
