Is Wisconsin's flogging helping Arizona? - OutsiderFan - 12-06-2014

And by extension, Stanford's chicken bowl prospects?

Wisconsin is losing 31-0 to Ohio State midway through 2nd Q against a 3rd string QB!  At least Arizona got crushed by Mariota.

No way is Wisconsin going to a big bowl game if Arizona isn't.

Re: Is Wisconsin's flogging helping Arizona? - BostonCard - 12-06-2014

Yup, with tOSU crushing Wisconsin, that means only tOSU and Michigan St. will go to the playoffs from the B1G.  Also, with FSU beating Georgia Tech, that also makes it more likely for Arizona to get one of the 12 spots, although that game is close.  Finally, I think we are also rooting for Baylor to win, as that would keep Kansas State from getting their tenth win, which also hopes Arisonas prospects.

OK, here's what we have, based on the prior committee rankings
1) Alabama (12-1): win
2) Oregon (12-1): win
3) TCU (11-1): win
4) Florida State (12-0): tied, will stay in top-11 even with a loss
5) tOSU (11-1): winning big
6) Baylor (10-1): winning
7) Arizona (10-3): Lost bad
8) Michigan State (10-2): Did not play, will likely jump Arizona
9) Kansas State (9-2): Losing to Baylor, so I doubt Arizona will fall further than them.
10) Georgia Tech (10-2): tied with Florida State.  With a win, will jump Arizona, with a close loss, Arizona might fall further than Tech
11) Ole Miss (9-3): Did not play.  Will a 9-3 Ole Miss rank ahead of a 10-3 Arizona?  They have a win over Alabama, but Arizona has a win over Oregon (they also have a win over Mississippi St,).  They also have a 30-0 loss to Arkansas that's worse than Arizona's loss to Oregon given that Arkansas ended 2-6 in SEC play.
12) Wisconsin (10-2): losing big.  No way does Arizona fall below them
13) Georgia (9-3): Best win is over #23 Missouri, worst loss is 38-20 to Florida, which is worse than Arizona's loss.  I doubt they jump over Arizona
14) UCLA (9-3): They also ended their season with a bad loss, LOL.
15) Missouri (10-3): Lost to Alabama, not going to jump anyone
16) ASU (9-3): Lost last regular season game to Arizona

It is hard to see enough teams jumping over Arizona to leave it out of a New Years Bowl.  Baylor beating Kansas State and Wisconsin losing badly, if they hold up, will likely ensure Arizona stays in the top-11.

By the way, through three quarters, Wisconsin has 115 yards of total offense, just 58 yards of passing offense.

I think Arizona goes to the Fiesta just because you can't really give a conference only 1 bid to the big 6. There's no rationale for it when you have multiple 10-win teams from that conference.

Maybe they rank outside the top 12, but I still think they go. The SEC isn't getting 4 teams and no one else deserves 3.

If they are outside the top 11 (top non power 5 champion is the 12th team in) the fiesta can't select them. Based on BC's helpful breakdown, they would have to fall behind 2 teams that also lost, and then the committee would have to move TWO SEC non-division champs (9-3) into the field, over 10-3 division champ Arizona. I think they are in.

What? The Fiesta doesn't select anything. The committee seeds all the top-6 bowls. The bowl committees might get to give input, but unless I'm hugely misunderstanding the process they're not actually picking. And as far as I've read the committee doesn't necessarily need to seed #5-11 into those bowls.

You somehow dropped Mississippi State who's at #10 (10-2), then moved everyone else up a slot.
Still come to the same conclusion, but it;s tighter.

I think you're right that the bowls don't select, though I'm not sure. In any case, they (whether the committee or the bowls) do have to follow the rankings.

*Edit: the committee selects the matchups, the field consists of six conference champs and the highest remaining ranked teams.

Yeah, they do need to put 5-11 in there, but since the rankings are arbitrary anyway they can just voodoo it so that the teams they want in have those rankings. I suppose doing it the 5-11 way makes sense, but since they're deciding everything it hardly seems necessary to me. It just means that instead of getting screwed by ranking higher but missing out, teams get screwed by ranking lower. It's not like anyone can really argue that they deserve to be #11 instead of #12, once you get past the 6-8 range it's really more of a "tier" for the next group anyway.

The selection show just started.  My four:

Oregon - Ohio State in the Rose

Alabama - FSU in the Sugar

such a traditionalist....

Clearly the best way to do it, so of course they didn't do that. We got Oregon-FSU and Alabama-OSU. Derp.

I hope the committee all gets the flu this Chirtmas  and Protestant Jesus is not happy.

Re: Is Wisconsin's flogging helping Arizona? - ChicagoCard - 12-07-2014

It's 1. Alabama, 2. Oregon, 3. FSU, and 4. Ohio St. Therefore it's Oregon - FSU in the Rose Bowl and Alabama - Ohio St in the Sugar.

I dunno, if they play like they did last night they can give Alabama a run for their money. However, the opening line is apparently OSU+9, so Vegas isn't expecting a nailbiter.

Re: Is Wisconsin's flogging helping Arizona? - oman - 12-07-2014

Yeah, mighty Wisconsin.  Who would have thought anyone could beat Wisconsin?

Re: Is Wisconsin's flogging helping Arizona? - yvonne - 12-07-2014

It's not that they beat them; it's how they beat them, and with their backup quarterback.
