Tavita Pritchard to...USF? -
needle - 12-09-2014
One Tampa Bay writer thinks Pritchard is a potential candidate to join Willie Taggart's staff at USF. Taggart has let go of both his coordinators.
Quote:Â Follow along here: Considering the long-term uncertainty of the USF situation, Taggart's not likely to find any established, well-paid coordinator to move to Tampa. Therefore, he may have to opt for a bright, promising assistant who understands what the Bulls coach wants to do. Enter Pritchard, who made 20 starts for Stanford over four seasons, the last three of which Taggart served as Cardinal running backs coach (2007-09).

I thought this was a joke...as in: Tavita goes to U of San Francisco, which doesn't have a team.
If true, oh, what a fun decision for Tavita - Redrum - 12-09-2014
Quote:There is a tide in the affairs of men, Which taken at the flood, leads on to fortune. Omitted, all the voyage of their life is bound in shallows and in miseries. On such a full sea are we now afloat. And we must take the current when it serves, or lose our ventures.
Assuming Tavita does have an offer at USF, does he consider USF the flood tide that leads on to fortune? Or,
instead of being "bound in shallows and miseries"Â does he consider his position at Stanford a great opportunity to learn his craft while playing on a bigger stage against better opponents?
In a decently long life, I only rode the flood tide twice. The first got me to Stanford, the second got me out of SoCal and on to a completely unanticipated life in a wider world. But it's still impossible for me to advise him. I don't know how to evaluate my taking a risk on a startup company's chances compared to a high risk/reward offer from a great guy to come coach with him in a high risk situation. Maybe all good football players are risk takers by nature.

Maybe he knows where Jimmy Hoffa is too.

Nah, Hogan was already ruined before TP set eyes on him. ;)
Hogan throws better than TP did, so I'm not sure how the coach was supposed to change the pupil's throwing motion. ???

Back in the day, Tiger Woods already had a better swing than anyone on the planet; he still used a swing coach, remade his swing, and then was better. It's the same with QB's. The best coaches aren't necessarily those who were the best players. This is a nice article about Andrew Luck's (and Cam Newton's) pre-draft private QB coach:

The guy played at Division II Tiffin University after coaches at Youngstown State asked him to switch positions. The point is you don't have to have been an elite quarterback to coach them.

Nice straw man.
As usual, Garvin overstates his case. Nobody claimed that Pritchard single-handedly ruined Kevin Hogan. What they questioned was whether a player four years out of college and who had worked nowhere else had the preparation and seasoning necessary to coach both running backs and quarterbacks at the FBS level.

I'm well aware that is sometimes or even often true. However, in some cases I still just don't see it.
