WVB: Stanford in the Regional Semis -
BostonCard - 12-12-2014
PLaying Oregon State, who we have NEVER lost to (am I tempting the woofing gods?) at 3 PM. You can watch the game on ESPN3.

We are up 2-0 after two sets. Oregon State played us fairly tough last time, as I recall, but so far Lutz has been tearing them up.
Re: WVB: Stanford in the Regional Semis -

Oregon State eeked out the third set and so we are going to a 4th set, up 2-1.
Re: WVB: Stanford in the Regional Semis -

We win the 4th set 25-15 to advance. Inky had 16 kills on 33 swings. Tomorrow we will play the winner of Illinois/Florida that is coming up shortly.Â

Stanford wins in 3 sets: 25-20, 25-14, 22-25, and 25-15.
Inky has 16 kills on .394 hitting; Howard 14 on .361, Burgess 12 on .303, Lutz 11 on .417. Nicely balanced attack.

Technically, I think it's "...to whom we have NEVER lost," but I'll leave that to the editors among us. :-) At least, unlike stupac, I'm willing to acknowledge the existence of woofing gods...
In any event, I'm betting the woofing gods gave up watching our matches about midway through the season, because our matches were simply too torturous on the fans. I love this team, and top to bottom I think they may be one of the most well-rounded we have had since I started watching WVB in the Kristin Klein era. But, man..., they're killing us! The 2012 Giants had nothing on these guys. ??? They can look sleeker than a Bugatti Veyron at Bonneville for long stretches, but then, for no apparent reason, transform into a poorly maintained Yugo (
http://content.time.com/time/business/article/0,8599,1972071,00.html) being driven badly over a bunch of potholes. Then, just when you think "Okay...this is it, we're toast," they uncork just enough great plays, the other side shanks a serve, we win again, and they get to dance to All Right Now one more time, while the fans all collapse.
Like I said, I'm pretty sure the woofing gods have decided it's easier to watch somebody they can figure out...
Anyway, on to the Elite Eight!!
Feed Inky! Go Card!

Florida just beat Illinois in an incredible 5 set match that went 16-14 in the fifth set. There were something like 30 ties during the match, not to mention the lead changes. I was not sure which side to root for, but I'm happy that they may be worn down somewhat coming into our match. Florida looked like an incredibly good blocking team. Their 6'4" middle blocker freshman Alhassan had 10 blocks!Â
Should be an interesting game tomorrow. It sure looked to me as if Florida scored a ton of points blocking the outside hitters. I don't know what that means for us, but I'm sure Dunning was watching.

Perhaps to avoid the whole who versus whom question I should have said, "Oregon State, who has never beaten us."
Add:
And more importantly, who have have still never beaten us.

I hope Florida is just a little gassed from yesterday's effort...my motto for Stanford sports this year after MWP, WSoc, etc.--whatever it takes!

Stanford just won set 2 and now up 2 - 0 over Florida.
On ESPNU

My Comcast package does not include ESPNU (pay extra to watch a few evehts a year? Nope). If the Cardinal prevail tonight, the semis and finals will be, sez the NCAA website, on ESPN2.

You can watch it online... as long as Comcast carries one of the ESPN channels, anything not on the dial can be watched online.

Stanford wins 3-0 (even though ESPN analyst predicted Florida would beat us). Dominating performance. Congrats to our Stanford Women!

So we will play Penn State in the national semis. If we get past them we would probably play Texas in the finals, who will be favored against whoever wins the other regional final (BYU vs. Nebraska--both surprise winners.)
We have beaten Penn State early in the season, although it was a difficult 5 set match and the announcers at the time pointed out that Penn State was very young and could be expected to improve dramatically over the course of the season. This will be a very difficult match. Last year, of course, Penn State knocked us out of the tournament in the regional finals and went on to win it all, but they lost several experienced seniors.
We played exceptionally well tonight, though. Women's volleyball could be our best shot this year at continuing the national championship streak.

@Boston Card -- Not true with ComcastXfinity in Portland OR. When I tried to go to ESPNU via WatchESPN.com, a pop-said that I could watch for an extra fee. My apt. building is exclusively Comcast; satellite alternatives are forbidden. Happily, next weekend I'm watching ESPN2 to root the Cardinal to the title.

I just loved that, and then the 180 degree change at the end, all praise on how Stanford played nearly perfectly and extolling the offensive balance. If only the ESPN analyst had done her homework or seen us play, she would have known that before the ridiculous prediction!

Teams I cannot root for because of WVB: PSU, Nebraska, Texas.Â
Go win a natty, Stanford!
