Latest on our favorite Duck - JohnR34231 - 12-13-2014

Couple of comments.
1. 4.0 student in HS? Wonder why we didn't recruit him?

2. Glad to see he's getting his degree. That definitely makes it even less likely he'll hang around the Duck pond for another year.

Didn't read the story but sawa long interview yesterday.  Recruit him as a WR?  That was his position as a Jr.

Re: Latest on our favorite Duck - oldalum - 12-13-2014

don't know our story with him, but the WSJ had a long article on why almost no one recruited him (Hawaii, soccer player, not a starter):

I don't know anything about Mariota's academics. But I wouldn't put too much stock in the somewhat casual reference to his being a 4.0 student. Sometimes a 4.0 is real, and sometimes it's a Reggie Bush 4.0 (which turned out to be far, far away from a 4.0 when the transcript arrived).

That's certainly true, you have to take most of the internet HS "facts" you read about a player with a grain of salt. Then again, unless you have inside information (which few of us do) what else do you have to go on?

A really good article on Mariota:

I'm really happy he will win the Voldemort. He's an outstanding role model. He's already graduated with a degree in general science.

He was behind an all-state QB his junior year so not much tape and nobody recruited him. Oregon has done a great job or recruiting QBs that fit their system and that others don't recruit.

Yeah, this year I'm pretty sure character mattered.  Heard somewhere this week:  "Q) How do we know Jameis Winston finished 4th in Voldemort voting?  A) Only three finalists were invited to the New York ceremony."

Anyone but Winston.  Success!

Re: Latest on our favorite Duck - BostonCard - 12-13-2014

For what it is worth, he was a second team Academic all Pac-12.  It credits him with a 3.22 GPA in General Studies.

Like others, I find him a fairly likeable and humble guy.  The Voldemort voters could have done a lot worse.

apparently not

Trevone Boykin was fourth, Ohio State quarterback J.T. Barrett fifth, Florida State quarterback Jameis Winston sixth

Come on.  We can't let the facts get in the way of a good quip.
