All-Time Stanford Basketball Team (Kind of) -
Hank 91 - 12-28-2014
I went to my first Stanford basketball game as a freshman in November of 1987. The team hosted a four-team "beat up the guests" weekend tournament, the name of which I can't recall. I was thinking yesterday about the best Stanford players I've seen in that time, so I decided to put together a first and second team and invite anyone interested to do the same. It should be fun, but what I'm most interested in is seeing how some of the more recent players fit in. I used to arrange my schedule around the Thursday-Saturday flow of Stanford's schedule, but last year's tournament win over Kansas and the following loss are probably the only two games I've watched tip to buzzer in the past five years. Anyway, here are my teams:
First Team:
PG Brevin Knight
SG Todd Lichti
SFÂ Josh Childress
PFÂ Adam Keefe
CÂ Brook Lopez
Second Team:
PG Arthur Lee
SG Casey Jacobsen
SFÂ Peter Sauer
PF Robin Lopez
CÂ Jason Collins
Thoughts?
Oh, and a quick note about Adam Keefe. He was sitting a few rows behind us at last month's UCLA game, and we had a quick conversation walking through the tunnel. Turns out he's the nicest guy -- we were at Stanford together and he actually had more questions for me about my Stanford experience than the other way around.

Randle might displace Lee this year as the second best to play the point guard position at Stanford during your designated time range. Randle is even less of a true point than Lee was though.
Landry seems a clear choice for the second team on the wing. If you insist on a SF instead of any wing, then Huestis or even Hill over Sauer (RIP).Â
I don't remember Robin being that great while at Stanford. I'd go with Madsen or Jarron.Â
I think Borchardt gives Jason a run for his money for the second center spot. Young might also deserve consideration because he's the only one of the group who played 4 years at Stanford.

Are we sure Randle's better than Hernandez? Hernandez, at his offensive peak, reached a level Randle won't touch. Randle was better his first two years than Hernandez, offensively. But I suspect Hernandez was better defensively, though I'd have to study each more closely to make a definitive call.

Though Brevin is clearly the best point guard we have ever had, the number two slot is a tough call. Hernandez is probably the second best "true" point guard we have had; Randle and Lee were more combo guards who were scorers first and distributors second. I would probably have Hernandez as the #2 PG in the all-modern Stanford team. I agree that Landry probably has to be in there somewhere, and it would be tough to exclude Madsen as one of our top two power forwards ever.
I'd keep the first team as is. I would make the second team: Hernandez, Jacobsen, Fields, Madsen, Jas Collins.

I think you have the first team pretty well nailed--except--and I'll put this in the form of a question.
As much as I loved Todd Lichti, was he really better than Casey Jakes? I just don't know. I might have them sharing their position. Cop-out, I know.
Love seeing the big redhead on the first team. My one enduring memory of Adam Keefe is that when he got an offensive rebound anywhere near the basket, we got two points. Period and exclamation point. (NPI)

If we were putting together a fantasy team (which is different than the greatest players of all time) of Stanford greats in their prime, the above mentioned names seems collectively exhaustive. The only name I would put out there is Josh Huestis to have his hustle and defense.

While Jacobsen might have been a better player, I decided to go with Lichti for two reasons. One, he was All Pac-10 all four years. Two, he was like a god to my friends and me. Remember the old arcade beneath LOTS? Four of us were playing pinball one night, and Lichti came in and started playing the machine next to ours. We couldn't even speak -- not even to each other -- the whole time he was there. A couple years later, the year after he graduated, Lichti was back for a particularly big basketball game and he stayed with his old buddy Andrew Vlahov in the Manzanita trailers. I know this because that afternoon two of my friends came racing back to our trailer to tell us that they had just finished getting their asses kicked in pool by Vlahov and Lichti as Jennifer Azzi watched. (God, the crush I had on Azzi...)
So, yeah, Lichti stays on the first team.

Hey - 12-28-2014
I missed it, when is the cut-off? Any all-time list has to have Hank Luisetti first, everything else is up in the air.
Speaking of older generation players, can anybody vouch for Jim Pollard? I believe he would have to be second.Â
Kim Belton? Anyone?
Then I have Brevin Knight, and after it's a lot of discussion.

The time period is 1987 to present, only because 1987 was when I arrived on campus and started watching Stanford basketball.

Ah. In that case, I approve of all the selections, although I'd love to find a way to get Mark Madsen in there.
